Job Description
Postdoctoral Researcher in Operations Research to conduct research in the areas of stochastic, decentralized, and/or multi‑level optimization with applications to critical infrastructure systems. Work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team in the Computational Engineering Division, collaborating with partner academic institutions and other national labs. Develop advanced models of decision‑making under uncertainty for critical infrastructure operations, planning, and resilience.
Hybrid schedule possible; flexible options for remote work.
Responsibilities- Develop and extend mathematical programming formulations (mixed‑integer programming, nonlinear programming, etc.) for critical infrastructure operations and planning optimization models.
- Design and implement high‑performance parallel solvers for stochastic, multi‑level, and decentralized optimization models.
- Analyze and mitigate performance bottlenecks in parallel solver implementations.
- Publish research results in peer‑reviewed journals and present at conferences and workshops.
- Contribute to grant proposals and collaborate within a multidisciplinary team.
- Pursue independent research interests and engage with internal and external scientists.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- U.S. citizenship required to secure DOE Q‑level security clearance.
- Ph.D. in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field.
- Fundamental knowledge of at least one open‑source algebraic modeling language (e.g., Pyomo, JuMP).
- Fundamental knowledge of at least one widely used optimization solver (e.g., HiGHS, Ipopt, Gurobi, CPLEX, Xpress).
- Experience developing software in Python, Julia, or C++.
- Experience developing specialized algorithms for optimization problems involving adversarial or uncertain inputs, or large‑scale problems.
- Publication record in high‑quality peer‑reviewed journals and/or conferences.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience with high‑performance computing and parallel programming libraries such as MPI.
- Experience applying mathematical optimization to critical infrastructure systems (electricity grid, natural gas networks).
- Experience processing and analyzing critical infrastructure information.
$122,028 – $143,328 annually
