Research Laboratory Specialist (Senior)
Department of Internal Medicine Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Michigan is hiring a highly organized and skilled individual to join our team. The laboratory investigates the pathobiology of a variety of lung diseases, including interstitial lung diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), vascular pathology associated with chronic lung diseases, and acute lung injury, using basic and translational science approaches.
The candidate is expected to work largely independently on a day-to-day basis, with weekly scheduled meetings with the Principal Investigator. The successful candidate will plan, develop, execute, and analyze an independent research project in the context of a supportive lab and institutional environment. Additionally, the candidate will collaborate with research investigators for project development and provide mentoring and supervision to research laboratory staff, ensuring successful laboratory operations and promoting a cohesive and productive working environment.
- Work directly with the principal investigator on the development and implementation of the research plan and research goals.
- Design and conduct research experiments in line with the research plan, review progress, and evaluate results.
- Conduct data collection, screening, verification, and analysis; interpret and implement research methodology based on analysis outcomes.
- Develop, modify, refine, or adapt techniques and procedures; modify and/or adjust quality control measures as needed.
- Proactively identify problems, troubleshoot, and analyze variations observed in regular testing protocols.
- Train users in equipment operation and laboratory techniques; explain and demonstrate technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations, and outcomes.
- Assist with the creation of posters, manuscripts, and presentations for meetings and grants.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific field.
- 5+ years of research experience i.e., published in a field of specialty, and academic knowledge in a field or discipline.
- Strong understanding of laboratory procedures and protocols.
- Experience in animal husbandry and handling, molecular and cellular techniques.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work in a team.
- Extreme attention to detail with good record-keeping.
- Proficiency with standard Windows Office software, spreadsheet applications, and graphics applications.
- Familiarity with relevant regulatory requirements and safety standards.
