Overview

Laboratory Technician II at Harvey Mudd College. Full Time. REQ-8280.

Position Summary

The Laboratory Technician II position is a grant funded position with expected funding Aug 24, 2026 - Aug 23, 2029 (some flexibility). The role provides technical lab support to faculty and students in a molecular parasitology research laboratory, performing routine and moderately complex responsibilities. Works independently reporting to the project PI. Molecular biology experiments include flow cytometry analysis, PCR, cloning, CUT&RUN (similar to ChIP-seq), parasite genetic modification, parasite cultivation, and library preparation for high-throughput sequencing.

The Schulz Tryp lab studies how organisms adapt to environments, focusing on African trypanosome parasite lifecycle. Disease:

Responsibilities
  • Conduct experiments using current methods in molecular biology; assist PI in developing and evaluating methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Prepare chemical reagents and solutions.
  • Ensure safe storage of biological and chemical materials.
  • Sterilize equipment, plasticware, and chemical reagents.
  • Monitor inventories of expendable supplies and advise on reordering; may order materials in consultation with PI and staff.
  • Assist PI with supervising and training research students in lab methods and procedures.
  • Responsible for data entry, retrieval, and analysis on Mac computers.
  • Document experimental work in laboratory notebooks.
  • Assist in proper collection and disposal of waste materials per regulations and department policy.
  • Participate in and contribute to a safe environment by staying current with safety regulations, maintaining equipment, orienting students, and ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Perform research as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Education:

    Bachelor's degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, or related field by May 2026. Combination of coursework and experience may be considered.
  • Experience:

    One to two years of experience with modern molecular biology instrumentation and laboratory techniques (DNA extraction, PCR, Sanger and Illumina sequencing); familiarity with command-line computational analyses is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    Ability to work independently and cooperatively; proficiency with computer software, preferably Python, R, and shell scripting; good manual dexterity; excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to use modern laboratory equipment in molecular biology; ability to communicate in English with faculty and students; knowledge of PCR, gel electrophoresis, and other routine molecular biology techniques; knowledge of running and programming command-line pipelines in Unix and Python;

    knowledge of safety standards.
Remote Work Eligibility

Category B:
All staff positions require initial on-campus work period. Remote work is allowed up to zero days per week during the academic year and up to one remote work day during the non-academic year, subject to approval and departmental needs.

Working Hours and Compensation

Standard hours generally 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday (hours may vary). Salary: $23-$25 per hour. Classification:
Non-exempt, full-time, benefits-eligible. Grant funded through Aug 24, 2026 - Aug 23, 2029 with potential renewal based on funding.

Principal Investigator (PI).
