Position Summary
Research Integrity Program Manager is a professional staff member managing daily operations of the research integrity and regulatory compliance programs housed in the office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies (RGS) se programs include human and animal protections, biological safety, financial conflict of interest, research security, export controls, responsible conduct of research, and adherence to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
The Research Integrity Program Manager serves as a member of the Research Integrity and Compliance Programs team, managing multiple compliance programs and associated review committees and issuing compliance and ethics approvals to University researchers for a large volume and diverse portfolio of both sponsored and non-sponsored research. He or she provides regulatory and program oversight, informs policy development and implementation, manages a diverse portfolio of research compliance protocols, and formalizes collaborative agreements with external research partner institutions.
This position reports to the Director of Research Integrity and Compliance Operations (Director).
The Research Integrity Program Manager provides regulatory and program oversight for multiple research compliance programs. Program management is provided through interpretation, clarification and application of federal and state regulations, policies, and guidance of institutional policies and procedures.
Protocol Management & Review – 40%The Research Integrity Program Manager manages a diverse portfolio of research compliance protocols in accordance with a large and varied set of federally required regulations, guidelines, statutes, as well as institutional policies and practices. He or she serves as a designated alternate voting member of the Institutional Review Board for the protection of human subjects (IRB) and functions in an advisory, non‑voting role for other compliance committees.
The role is responsible for conducting in‑depth review and evaluation of research compliance protocol submissions to ensure adherence to complex regulatory requirements and institutional policies.
The Research Integrity Program Manager is responsible for providing regulatory and administrative oversight for multiple research compliance committees.
Professional Educational & Related Training Activities – 10%The Research Integrity Program Manager serves as a subject matter expert and provides guidance to researchers and committees while serving a key role on a team of professionals.
This position is in‑person and based at Portland State University’s vibrant urban campus in downtown Portland, where you’ll be part of a welcoming and collaborative community. We offer flexible scheduling options and, when operational needs allow, the possibility of limited remote work (typically up to one day per week) under an approved remote work agreement in line with University policy.
Minimum Qualifications- BA/BS with 4-6 years of related experience working in research integrity or research administration, or Master’s degree with 2+ years of related experience, with working knowledge of research ethics and compliance regulations and best practices.
- Demonstrated experience using multiple resources and references to understand complex regulations, laws and policies and ability to plan and carry out multiphase projects, including modifying techniques to solve a wide range of issues related to research integrity and compliance program oversight.
- Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills and providing excellent customer service to a variety of audiences.
- Experience with research software and database systems and developing forms/processes using prescribed resources.
- Experience drafting policy, procedures and guidance documents and resources.
- Broad knowledge of overall research administration with experience in a University environment.
