What Your Job Will Be Like:We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join The Materials Physics Department at Sandia National Laboratories. The researcher will join a new project focused on connecting device physics to computer science applications as part of a large, multi-disciplinary project that spans multiple departments and institutions including universities. The researcher will be responsible for prototyping and testing new memory devices and discovering their physical properties and utility for executing computer algorithms, including matrix operations and other neuromorphic inspired algorithms.
The work includes synthesizing and characterizing new materials, fabricating devices and quantifying their electrical, chemical and thermal properties. The work will include clean room fabrication, noise characterization and the development of new physics models.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Synthesis of materials with sputter deposition and other means
Clean room fabrication
Low and high temperature electronic transport measurements
Electrical testing of device structures made in collaboration with the team
Work independently as well as contribute creatively to team efforts
Present results at national/international meetings and publish research in high profile peer-reviewed journals
Due to the nature of the work, the selected candidate must work onsite at the Sandia Livermore site.
Qualifications We Require:- PhD in physics, electrical engineering, materials science, or a closely related field
- Hands-on experience in electronic materials synthesis and electronic properties measurement
- A record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences
- Experience with clean room fabrication
- Experience with resistive random-access memory or other computing devices
- Experience with electrochemistry
- Experience with neuromorphic computing algorithms
- Experience with Python and FPGA based testing setups
- Experience with analog computing circuits.
The Materials Physics department performs fundamental research on the structure and properties of materials to support programs in energy research, device physics, materials reliability, and national security. Specific activities include experimental and modeling studies of surface electronic structure and surface atomic structure and dynamics of metals, oxides, low dimensional semiconductors, and adsorbates; atomic-scale structure and composition analysis of metals, semiconductors, and composites;
electrical and optical properties of low-dimensional semiconductors and optoelectronic devices; and the structural and electrochemical characterization of solid-state ionic materials. The Department supports internal and external sponsors and government agencies that seek solutions to problems of fundamental scientific inquiry, energy sustainability, and national defense.
