Position: ASST RES SCIENTIST

Assistant Research Scientist

The Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences is seeking an Assistant Research Scientist to join our team and contribute to our pioneering research in irradiation assisted stress corrosion cracking of materials for light water reactors. The successful candidate will be involved in a variety of research projects involving corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, and mechanical testing of irradiated and non-irradiated materials in high temperature water.

The role will also involve publishing and presenting research findings in top-tier scientific journals and conferences, participating in instructional activities and course lectures as appropriate, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, and serving on dissertation committees. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, capable of developing independent research proposals, and will contribute to the academic and professional community through continuous scholarly activities and collaborations and mentoring and teaching activities with undergraduate and graduate students.

Required Qualifications *
  • Ph.D. in materials science, nuclear engineering, or a related field, with a focus on metallurgy
  • A minimum of 2 years of research experience in light water reactor corrosion
  • Experience with stress corrosion cracking and radiation effects in metals
  • Experience with materials characterization, including SEM, TEM, and XRD
  • Demonstrated potential for scholarly development, supported by multiple first-author, peer-reviewed scientific journal publication in the field of nuclear materials
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams and interact effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Strong mentoring skills, with experience supervising undergraduate and graduate research projects
  • Active participation and a record of presentations at relevant academic and professional meetings
Modes of Work

The mode of work for this position is ONSITE. Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.
