We are seeking outstanding Postdoctoral Appointees to support research projects developing advanced optical probes for sensing applications such as spectroscopy and atomic/ion clocks. The atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) and quantum sensing and technology development department performs cutting‑edge research on a broad range of national security relevant projects including development of microwave clocks based on trapped ions, compact/low power/fieldable atomic clocks, optically pumped magnetometers, inertial sensing with atom interferometers, optical comb development for remote spectroscopy, and entangled photon imaging detection.
- Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
- A PhD in atomic, molecular, or optical, physics or physical materials science or chemistry conferred within five (5) years prior to employment.
- Ability to obtain and maintain an L‑level security clearance.
- Experience in one or more of the following areas:
- laser spectroscopy
- laser optics
- single photon counting techniques
- entangled photon sources
- microscopy and imaging
- diode laser systems and fiber optics
- optical alignment
- mechanical design
- computer control of experiments and electronic equipment
- Track record of successful research and development in AMO-relevant fields
- Experience with one or more of the following:
- Hands‑on time with laser alignment and optical systems
- Data acquisition, signal processing, and data analysis
- Artificial intelligence tools
- Matlab, Mathematica, Python
- Solidworks, Zemax, COMSOL
- Outstanding academic/research record
- Strong oral, written, interpersonal and organization skills, including the ability to collaborate well in a diverse team environment and develop positive relationships.
