Epidemiologist

If so, look no further than the Department of Health, Bureau of Epidemiology, Division of Infectious Disease Investigations. We are searching for an Epidemiologist who may be interested in supporting vital public health efforts by analyzing data, improving surveillance systems, and guiding prevention strategies.

Your expertise will help the Commonwealth safeguard its residents and improve statewide health systems.

This position supports statewide efforts to monitor, investigate, and prevent vaccine preventable diseases through strong data management and public health action. You will work with partners to strengthen surveillance systems and ensure high-quality epidemiological information. As the federally funded Vaccine Preventable Disease Epidemiologist, you will perform the following duties:

  • Surveillance Oversight: Lead implementation and evaluation of systems that track vaccine preventable diseases
  • Data Analysis: Review, interpret, and summarize surveillance information to guide public health decisions
  • Outbreak Response: Collaborate on investigations by creating tools and monitoring data to identify cases and contributing factors
  • Prevention Planning: Develop statewide guidelines and procedures that support disease control and help vulnerable populations
  • Public Consultation: Provide guidance to health partners and respond to inquiries on surveillance and informatics topics
  • Grant Coordination: Write applications, track progress measures, and participate in work groups related to funding needs

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch.
  • Occasional statewide and out-of-state travel and irregular/flexible work hours including overnights, weekends, and holidays may be required
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Possession of either a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in epidemiology, Doctoral degree in Medicine (MD), Osteopathy (DO), Dental Surgery/Medicine (DDS/DDM/DMD), or Veterinary Medicine (DVM); AND two years of professional experience investigating disease outbreaks, designing and conducting epidemiologic studies, or designing and maintaining a disease surveillance system; or
  • Possession of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in a biological science such as biology, genetics, nursing or virology; AND either a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree or Master of Science (MS) degree in epidemiology; AND two years of professional experience investigating disease outbreaks, designing and conducting epidemiologic studies, or designing and maintaining a disease surveillance system.

Other Requirements:

  • This particular position also requires applicants to possess one year of full-time professional experience using either SAS or R statistical software to perform data analyses.
  • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
