Job Summary

Church & Dwight is seeking a Research Chemist to provide technical expertise and help with the development and qualification/implementation of new oral care products while also supporting the maintenance and improvement of existing products.

About the Role

The Research Chemist will help lead product research and development from concept to launch, as well as post-launch activities, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop products.

This is a hybrid role based in Princeton, NJ, and requires in-person attendance on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, with remote work options on Mondays and Fridays.

Role Accountabilities and Responsibilities
  • Help lead product research and development from concept to launch, as well as post-launch activities:
    Collaborate with cross-functional team to develop product. Aid in the transfer of technologies to pilot lab and manufacturing sites.
  • Provide technical support for: (1) production start-ups and new product launches, (2) existing brand maintenance and improvement, and (3) manufacturing operations to maintain quality and integrity of existing products.
  • Identify product concepts and technical approaches, demonstrate concept and technical feasibility, formulate detailed development plans and execute such plans to meet objectives and commitments.
  • Conduct bench-top formula development of oral care products:
    Design and execute experiments. Collect and analyze stability data. Report results, draw conclusions and make data-based recommendations to management.
  • Design and execute laboratory experiments to substantiate label claims. Coordinate and support testing by internal service groups and/or external testing labs.
  • Stay abreast of market and competitor activities, as well as consumer product feedback. Help explore ways to increase customer satisfaction levels with new and existing products by identifying and understanding consumer needs and the gaps between consumer needs and existing products.
  • Create, update, and maintain electronic product specifications. Assemble product Bundle Book/Design History Files, and relevant documentation to support launch of new products and maintain existing ones.
  • Adhere to and follow established procedures and policies for working in the laboratory designated for the development of FDA regulated OTC products.

  • Demonstrated strong organizational, work planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage a large workload at times and to adapt to reprioritization as necessary in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional environment involving marketing, processing, packaging, analytical, safety, clinical, regulatory, etc.
  • Good verbal and written skills.
Education and Experience

Required Qualifications
  • The successful candidate will have a B.S. degree from an accredited institution in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or related disciplines.
  • 5+ years of laboratory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. in a relevant discipline with 0 – 3 years of experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with FDA-regulated OTC products preferred.
Compensation and Benefits

The U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is $71,000 – $101,100. This position is also eligible for a bonus.

The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, job-related knowledge/skills, experience, business needs, geographical location, and internal pay parity. Compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
