Student Research Assistant - Natural Sciences (TEMP)

Seeking a motivated and independent student research assistant to help conduct cutting-edge research on flood risks associated with buried wetlands . This role focuses on using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to map, analyze, and assess how historical wetland loss impacts modern flood vulnerability. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who excels at independent problem-solving and brings creative thinking to complex spatial and environmental challenges.

Responsibilities*

GIS Mapping & Spatial Analysis:
Utilize GIS software (ArcGIS Pro) to compile, digitize, and analyze historical maps, soil data, and modern elevation models to locate buried wetlands and model flood risks.

Independent Project Management:
Manage day-to-day research tasks, troubleshoot workflow bottlenecks, and keep the project moving forward with minimal supervision.

Creative Problem Solving:
Develop innovative methodologies to bridge data gaps, including reconciling historical archival maps with modern satellite and LiDAR data.

Data Integration & Documentation:
Organize large spatial datasets and clearly document methodologies to assist in the preparation of research reports and presentations.

Required Qualifications *
  • Education:

    Currently enrolled undergraduate student at UM-Dearborn.
  • Technical

    Skills:

    Strong proficiency with ArcGIS Pro and various spatial analysis tools.
  • Work Style:
    Proven ability to work independently, maintain self-motivation, and manage time effectively in a research setting.
  • Cognitive

    Skills:

    Excellent critical thining and a creative approach to overcoming data limitations and technical challenges.
