Positions with a designated work location in New York City, Nassau, Rockland, Suffolk, or Westchester Counties will receive a $4,000 annual downstate adjustment (pro-rated for part-time positions).

(OPH) CEH - Bureau of Toxic Substance Assessment

Responsibilities
The Research Scientist I will work within the Bureau of Toxic Substance Assessment (BTSA) to proactively provide assistance to schools to create a safe and healthy place for students and staff to learn and work by conducting research on potential health impacts from exposures to environmental contaminants and stressors and strategies to prevent exposures in educational settings. This will also include training school staff to implement established indoor air quality monitoring protocols and create indoor air quality management plans.

The incumbent will also provide technical assistance to schools upon request related to environmental health concerns and make recommendations for improving indoor air quality. The incumbent will also follow up on concerns reported by schools and provide information to callers from the public and other governmental agencies. The incumbent will be responsible for contributing to a variety of written reports and for responding to inquiries from schools orally and in writing.

Bachelor's degree in a related field and two years of research experience; OR a Master’s degree in a related field and one year of research experience.

• Related degree and/or experience in industrial hygiene or public health;
• Academic or working knowledge and understanding of indoor air quality;
• Experience collecting or working with environmental data, such as air sampling data;
• Knowledge of the effects of chemicals and materials on human health and the environment;
• Knowledge of federal and state building regulations;
• Experience working in or with K-12 schools;
• Demonstrated experience working with a multidisciplinary teams;
• Excellent interpersonal skills;
• Strong verbal and written communications skills that include preparing and delivering presentations;
• Experience preparing technical reports or other data-driven or science-based resources/ materials;
• Strong organizational skills.

Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

Visa sponsorship may be available for this position, in accordance with applicable federal requirements.

Travel up to 25% of the time will be required.

The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location specified in the job posting and must also be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states:
New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts, prior to hire.

This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, with a combination of onsite and remote work.
