Job Description
The Department of Physics at Syracuse University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in experimental quantum information science in Prof. Ivan Pechenezhskiy’s research group. The successful candidate will conduct research on superconducting quantum circuits through projects focusing on the physics of superconducting qubits, quasi particle dynamics in superconducting circuits, and superconducting metamaterials. Duties include device design, experiment planning, low-temperature device characterization, data analysis, numerical modeling, reporting and publishing research results, supporting collaborative research activities, and mentoring graduate and undergraduate researchers in the Pechenezhskiy research group and the Institute for Quantum and Information Sciences at Syracuse University.
This position is part of a bargaining unit and is represented by a union, SEIU Local 200 United
Qualifications
Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field by the time of appointment. Candidates should have a strong experimental research background and the ability to conduct research both independently and collaboratively. Co-authorship of peer-reviewed publications or recent arXiv preprints is required.
Job Specific Qualifications
Experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred: superconducting qubits and superconducting quantum circuits; cryogenics; low-temperature condensed matter physics; microwave systems and electronics; nanofabrication; automated data acquisition; numerical simulation and data analysis. Experience working with dilution refrigerators and cryogenic microwave measurement systems is particularly desirable. Candidates with closely related experimental backgrounds who want to develop expertise in superconducting quantum circuits are also encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
- Conduct experimental research on superconducting qubits, quasi particle dynamics, superconducting metamaterials, and other topics in superconducting quantum circuits.
- Plan, implement, and troubleshoot cryogenic microwave experiments, perform measurements, and analyze experimental data.
- Document, present, and publish research results in peer-reviewed publications and at scientific meetings.
- Support collaborative research activities within Syracuse University and with external collaborators.
- Work with and mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers in the Pechenezhskiy research group and the Institute for Quantum and Information Sciences.
- Contribute to other research and development activities within the scope of externally funded research programs.
Physical Requirements
Ability to perform work in a research laboratory setting.
Tools/Equipment
Dilution refrigerators and other cryogenic equipment; microwave test and measurement equipment; low-noise electronic instrumentation; computer-controlled data acquisition systems;
Python-based data acquisition and analysis software; electromagnetic simulation software; microscopy and nanofabrication equipment, as appropriate to individual projects.
