A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As an Assistant Store Manager (ASM), you ensure the smooth running of your store through leadership and deployment of the store team. In this role, the effectiveness of your team is a direct reflection of your ability to lead and motivate that team to deliver expected results.

Full-Time

• Lead and motivate the store team to deliver expected results and ensure smooth daily operations.
• Demonstrate good “behaviors” and uphold high standards, reinforcing expectations with the management team and store staff.
• Maintain consistency of Bookstore Basics, including store presentation to expected standards.
• Maintain a well-organized stockroom and backstock, and ensure timely receiving and shelving of deliveries.
• Provide commercial direction, presentation and execution across the Front of Store (FOS) and table displays, highlighting key titles and promotions.
• Maintain strong section detail and appropriate stock levels, collaborating with the Inventory Cluster Support (ICS) team.
• Ensure a well-presented Children’s Department with clear ownership, balanced stock, and a welcoming space.
• Execute specialty visual merchandising, replenishment and disciplines; deliver Gift and FOS presentation, Toys & Games and other non-book sections correctly.
• Support café standards with the store team and promote Membership and book picks.
• Provide good service by ensuring FOS coverage and a proactive approach to helping customers in a natural, unobtrusive way.
• Deliver friendly, knowledgeable, and professional service at the registers; work with Membership and store services to achieve sales objectives.
• Sell Our Monthly Picks and ensure the team demonstrates bookstore behaviors in a natural and engaging way.
• Prioritize health, safety, and loss prevention; demonstrate de-escalation techniques and knowledge of Code Adam and emergency procedures.
• Execute roster planning aligned with the budget to balance store scheduling; collaborate with Rota Cluster Support (RCS) and Recruiter Cluster Support (RC) as needed.

• Demonstrate effective ownership of key responsibilities to support and lead the store team and operations, ensuring smooth day-to-day operations.
• Support developmental priorities within the team to meet store demands and individual booksellers’ potential, working with the Store Manager, People Cluster Support and/or RC.
• Hold the store team accountable for consistent standards appropriate for their position; address opportunities promptly and fairly.
• Foster a positive working environment by acting with kindness, fairness and respect and encouraging this with the team.
• Communicate and deliver company messages to the store team clearly and consistently, sharing feedback with Cluster or Home Office resources as needed.
• Demonstrate integrity and personal credibility to inspire engagement and performance within the team and Cluster.
• Be resilient under pressure, remaining equitable and focused on goals and objectives.
• Run the store effectively in the absence of the Store Manager, enabling the Cluster to fulfill a role or support the team or other Cluster stores.
• Drive personal development by listening, learning, and applying feedback to improve and achieve career goals.

All this work requires physical activity including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and a lot of walking. You may work in other stores as needed to support the wider Cluster. You will comply with all company policies and procedures.
