Position: Senior Project Controls Specialist - Construction (Remote Options)

Job Description

CDM Smith is hiring a Senior Project Controls Specialist to support construction projects across various locations in the U.S. The role develops complex schedule and cost baselines, analyzes monthly data, identifies variances, and supports risk reserves and financial forecasts. It involves creating and maintaining project plans, performing earned value management, and communicating progress through standardized reports. The specialist works closely with project teams and management while adhering to safety protocols.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with internal procedures and federal/government regulations; gather project progress information from managers and team members; update and monitor moderate to high‑complexity projects; evaluate and update schedule dates, percent complete, resource requirements, subcontractor commitments, and accruals; review schedule progress and productivity; develop time‑phased cost and resource forecasts; validate costs; monitor deliverables and actual expenditures versus forecasts; perform performance reporting using Earned Value Management;

    conduct financial analysis including variance, risk, and profit/loss; perform non‑routine analyses and prepare reports; document the impact of project changes on cost/schedule baselines.
  • Manage project manager portfolios and projects on an international scale.
  • For moderate to high complexity projects, develop and document planning considerations, objectives, scope, and milestones; maintain and analyze integrated critical‑path schedules; evaluate early warning signals and recommend resource realignments.
  • Generate and analyze earned value reports for complex projects; discuss observations with project managers; perform portfolio analysis and review findings with portfolio managers on on‑time delivery, risk forecasts, and gross profit erosion; evaluate project execution and trends; prepare client and internal status reports.
  • Use document management protocols to manage storage and retrieval of project documentation.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to junior staff; mentor and develop junior engineers; may supervise their work.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • 5 years of related experience.
  • Equivalent additional directly related experience may be considered in lieu of a college degree.
  • Domestic and/or international travel may be required; frequency dependent on duties and project demands.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience managing construction projects.
  • Extensive Earned Value Management (EVM) experience, successfully managing budgets and schedules for large projects.
  • Proficiency in Primavera P6 with experience developing and managing complex project schedules for large‑scale construction initiatives.
Skills & Abilities
  • In‑depth knowledge of project management methodology, budget development, planning, control, assurance, finance, and accounting practices.
  • Excellent understanding of project goals, drivers, strategies, risks, opportunities, project finance, accounting, or business administration.
  • Ability to independently plan and manage the detailed execution of a construction project, interpreting contact documents, drawings, and technical specifications; develop work breakdown structures, schedules, resource plans, and ensure compliance with all requirements and standards.
  • Expert level knowledge of the Enterprise Project Portfolio Management suite (Primavera P6).
  • Proficiency in Project Performance tools (Eco Sys).
  • Excellent teamwork, collaboration, and adaptability to fast‑paced environments with shifting priorities.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
