Retail & Store Manager
Summary/Objective:
Big Agnes is searching for a driven, people-first Assistant Store Manager to assist in opening and leading our flagship retail store in Steamboat Springs — the physical heartbeat of a brand born in the mountains. As Assistant Store Manager, you will help manage the full store experience: sales performance, team development, visual merchandising, inventory management, and community engagement. You are equal parts dirtbag and operator — someone who can geek out on tent pole geometry with a customer, then pivot to a P&L conversation with the executive team without missing a beat.
You will set the standard for how customers experience our gear, our people, and our story — and you will help build a team and culture that lives those standards every shift.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:Store Opening Operations & Performance
- Partner with the Store Manager to coordinate all pre-opening logistics — from fixture setup and inventory receiving to visual merchandising — making sure the floor is dialed before day one.
- Lead the hiring and onboarding of the store’s founding team, including scheduling, training, and getting new hires up to speed on Big Agnes product, systems, and culture.
- Own grand opening execution alongside the Store Manager — coordinating with marketing on local activations, managing in-store traffic flow, and ensuring the crew is ready to deliver a killer customer experience from the jump.
- Serve as the operational backbone during the build-out phase, tracking punch lists, vendor coordination, and readiness timelines so nothing falls through the cracks.
- Help establish store standards, Standard Operating Procedures, and team rhythms from scratch — setting the tone for how the store runs long after opening week is behind us.
- Own all aspects of daily store operations: opening/closing, scheduling, staffing, and floor management.
- Drive revenue against monthly, quarterly, and annual targets; analyze sales data and adjust tactics accordingly.
- Manage store P&L including payroll, shrink, and operating expenses.
- Partner with the D2C and Shopify teams to align in-store and online promotions, inventory levels, and customer experience.
- Recruit, hire, onboard, and develop a high-performing retail team that reflects Big Agnes’s culture.
- Coach and mentor staff on product knowledge, selling techniques, and customer service standards.
- Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and team meetings; maintain a feedback-rich environment.
- Build a bench — identify emerging talent and create clear development paths.
- Champion a differentiated in-store experience that reflects the Big Agnes brand and earns lasting customer loyalty.
- Manage and respond to customer feedback; partner with the marketing team on reputation and reviews.
- Activate local community partnerships, events, and demo programs that drive traffic and brand affinity.
- Maintain visual merchandising standards consistent with brand guidelines across all seasons.
- Oversee all inventory management: receiving, cycle counts, replenishment, and end-of-season markdowns.
- Buying and negotiating with vendors.
- Collaborate with the wholesale and operations teams in Net Suite to align stock allocation and sell-through.
- Partner with the product and marketing teams on new product launches, in-store education, and seasonal transitions.
- 5+ years of retail experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisor/manager role.
- Strong people leadership skills — experience hiring, developing, motivating, and retaining a retail team.
- Genuine passion for the outdoor industry; comfortable and credible talking gear.
- Proficiency with retail POS and inventory systems (Shopify experience a strong plus).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- The position is not approved for remote work.
- Schedule will require weekend, some nights and holiday shifts.
- Travel to trade shows is expected.
- Experience at a specialty outdoor, run, or bike retailer.
- Familiarity with Net Suite or similar ERP systems.
- Community ties in Steamboat Springs or the broader Yampa Valley.
- Demonstrated ability to manage event-driven or seasonally variable retail environments.
- Ability to stand for period of times at the computer/cash register.
- Possible heavy lifting up to 65lbs, bending whilst assisting other departments.
