Job SummaryWe are seeking a Senior Editor to join the Bantam Dell imprint, focusing on fiction titles in romance, historical, suspense, mystery, and romantic comedy categories.
Responsibilities- Acquire manuscripts—mainly fiction—in the rom‑com, historical fiction, suspense, mystery, and romance categories.
- Edit manuscripts, write editorial letters, and line‑edit manuscripts; work with authors on concepts, outlines, and revisions.
- Cultivate relationships in the agent community, particularly in these categories; develop new agent relationships and maintain ongoing ones.
- Stay current on potential acquisitions of self‑published authors with breakout potential.
- Position works for target readerships, then collaborate with cover, publicity, and marketing to develop publishing plans to reach the widest possible audience.
- Work with production and managing editorial departments on copyediting, schedule, and design.
- Prepare sales materials as needed, including endorsement requests, flap copy, title information sheets, reading guide questions, and value‑add materials.
- Keep abreast of category trends and competitive titles.
- Handle daily correspondence, office work, phone calls, and attend required meetings.
- Handle special projects, backlist titles, house authors as assigned, and work collaboratively with the larger team.
- At least 5 years of book editorial experience and a solid track record of shaping commercially successful books.
- Strong editorial, communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, organizational, and negotiation skills.
- Ability to work independently and attend to detail.
- Deep category knowledge in romance and related fiction genres.
- Ability to cultivate agent relationships and stay current on industry trends.
Salary range: $78,000–$85,000 per year. All positions are eligible for an annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.
