Research Scientist
Overview
The Geologist (Researcher I) will provide field and lab support to bedrock and hydrogeology research and mapping teams at the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (WGNHS). Work will involve collection of geological and hydrological data; description of outcrops, rock core, and cuttings; geochemical sampling and analysis of rock core; measurements of stream flow; water quality sampling of surface water and groundwater;
GIS analysis; and management and reporting of associated data.
The position description represents a general outline of job duties, expectations, responsibilities, and is not intended to be comprehensive in nature. The position is accountable to the State Geologist. Day-to-day activities will be supervised by project Principal Investigators. The position will require travel and overnight stays to perform fieldwork across the state.
Location and TermStatewide Location. The Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey is located within Madison, WI. The initial period of employment will be 2 years (through Feb 2028), with the possibility to become renewable or be extended contingent upon available funding. Partial remote work is possible in compliance with the WGNHS remote work policy, including requirements for a remote work agreement (RWA) and access to high-speed internet and a university-provided computer.
Transportation between home and assigned work location is not payable/reimbursable.
This position requires some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location, subject to an approved remote work agreement. The position has the possibility of working up to 2 days remote per the WGNHS remote work policy.
Travel and DrivingIt is expected that employees will make individual arrangements for transportation adequate to meet position responsibilities and essential job functions. Applicants are required to have a valid drivers license and reliable transportation for periodic in-state work travel, and/or comply with requirements for UW-Madison vehicle use authorization.
Physical Requirements- Ability to lift 50 pounds with assistance
- Ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions
- Sitting, standing, and walking over uneven ground will be required
- Develops and implements increasingly complex research methodologies, procedures, and criteria
- Assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding
- Collects and analyzes increasingly complex research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures
- Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities and assists with publications
- Assists with the development of research methodologies and procedures
- Trains individuals and groups on equipment operations, research protocols, and techniques within a specialized laboratory or research area
