Looking to make a tangible impact on Utah's water quality? The Division of Water Quality is looking for an Environmental Scientist to serve as our Spills Coordinator. This position may be filled at any of the advertised levels listed below. Salary depends on the job level offered within the series.
Key Responsibilities- As a member of the Compliance & Enforcement Section, this position is responsible for promptly responding to water quality incidents including spills and emergencies, potentially after business hours. This includes conducting onsite field response, sampling, stakeholder coordination, documentation, and tracking.
- Enforce surface water and groundwater quality regulations, including permit compliance, in close coordination with the Division Permitting Sections; conduct fair and consistent enforcement evaluations, prepare comprehensive formal enforcement documents and participate in settlement negotiations in good faith.
- Conduct environmental compliance inspections and formal audits in coordination with Permitting Sections and prepare detailed written inspection reports.
- Provide education and outreach to local health departments, local government and industry.
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience responding to water quality spills in the state of Utah, including coordinating with local and municipal stakeholders.
- Experience with water quality standards, inspections, and compliance and enforcement activities under the Utah Water Quality Act.
- This position is both field and office-based with extensive in-state travel required.
- Ability to analyze and summarize environmental data; draft technical reports; efficiently document and report findings, interpret results and make sound recommendations.
- Ability to multitask complex enforcement cases and daily incidents under minimal supervision and adapt quickly to changing priorities.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
The selected candidate for this position may be brought in as an Environmental Scientist I with a salary range of $25.27 - $37.95 per hour, an Environmental Scientist II with a salary range of $29.73 - $44.66 per hour, or an Environmental Scientist III with a salary range of $34.98 - $52.56 per hour.
