Ecologist/Senior/Principal with specialism in ornithology

We have an exciting opportunity for an ecologist with a special interest in ornithology to join our award‑winning ecology team across the UK. Positions are available on a permanent full‑time as well as part‑time, job share or flexible basis.

Role

  • Deliver challenging, diverse, and innovative projects across transport, water and energy sectors for clients including government agencies, local authorities, utilities and energy companies.
  • Work within multidisciplinary teams, building rapport and trust so that ornithological requirements are recognised and constraints acted upon.
  • Lead ornithological surveys, provide expert advice to internal and external clients and, when workload permits, support other ecological surveys and project tasks.
  • Apply knowledge of national legislation to support Environmental Impact Assessment and Habitats Regulations Appraisals.
  • Combine desk and site‑based work, travelling across the UK and staying away from home during the working week as required.

Qualifications

  • Background in terrestrial ecology with relevant industry experience, including technical reporting and impact assessment mindful of national legislation and guidance.
  • Good bird identification skills and understanding of bird ecology, including generic and species‑specific survey techniques.
  • Experience scoping and executing field surveys and analysing data.
  • Associate membership of a professional body (or the experience to obtain membership); full membership or chartership is also welcomed.
  • Inquisitive, willing to learn and highly responsible.
  • Strong written communication skills, able to produce clear and concise reports.

Preferred

  • Current and full driving licence.
  • Additional ecological specialism beyond ornithology.

Benefits

  • Up to 10% company contribution to pension.
  • Reimbursement for relevant professional development and memberships.
  • Well‑being support, including medical cover, digital GP, mindfulness platform and confidential counselling services.
  • Flexible working arrangements: part‑time, compressed hours, annualised hours contract and desk‑based roles.
  • Parental benefits: enhanced leave pay, fertility and family‑forming support, and parental transition programme.

We value safety, integrity, inclusion and diversity. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and are a disability‑confident employer; candidates who meet the minimum criteria will be interviewed. Applications from candidates seeking flexible working or who may not meet all listed requirements are encouraged.
