Contribution to NRSI

NRSI is looking for a detail-oriented and knowledgeable Environmental Monitor / Project Biologist with expertise in erosion and sediment control (ESC) measures, supporting construction activities by ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, permits, and best management practices. The role includes conducting field monitoring, advising on mitigation strategies, and protecting sensitive habitats and natural resources while enabling safe, compliant, and efficient construction operations.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct regular site inspections during construction to monitor erosion and sediment control (ESC) measures.
  • Verify compliance with approved ESC plans, Environmental Management Plans (EMP), environmental permits, and applicable legislation.
  • Identify deficiencies or non-compliance issues and recommend or coordinate corrective actions.
  • Document site conditions, inspection findings, and corrective measures using written reports and photographs.
  • Coordinate with construction managers, contractors, and environmental consultants to ensure timely and effective implementation of environmental controls.
  • Monitor weather conditions and assess potential environmental risks related to storm events and seasonal conditions.
  • Assist with spill prevention, spill response, and environmental incident reporting as required.
  • Support environmental training, toolbox talks, and awareness initiatives for site personnel as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records suitable for regulatory review, audits, and agency reporting.
Your Education
  • Diploma or degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resources, or a related field. Similar educational experience will also be considered.

Job Requirements
  • Experienced (minimum 2 years) in erosion and sediment control monitoring and/or construction environmental compliance is preferred.
  • Must have an experience with understanding and applying erosion and sediment control practices, environmental legislation, and construction methods.
  • Ability to read and interpret environmental management plans, engineering drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather, terrain, and construction site conditions.
  • Willing and able to travel for multi-day field surveys, sometimes in remote locations, under inclement weather, in a variety of environmental conditions, and occasionally for long hours.
  • Ability to work independently on a regular basis as well as collaboratively in a team.
  • Strong observational, organizational, and communication skills, with demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail, including maintaining well-organized and thorough field notes, as well as proficiency in report writing, data entry, and data analysis.
  • A valid driver's license, a minimum age of 21 for rental vehicle operation, and access to a personal vehicle insured for work purposes.
Assets
  • ESC, CISEC, or similar environmental or safety certification or training is an asset.
  • Ministry of Transportation Ontario’s (MTO) Registry, Appraisal and Qualification System (RAQS) certification for Erosion and Sediment Control Monitoring, Fisheries Assessment, Fisheries Compliance and Natural Sciences.
