Position: INTERDISCIPLINARY - PHYSICAL SCIENTIST / METEOROLOGIST / OCEANOGRAPHER

Overview

You will serve as an interdisciplinary Physical Scientist / Meteorologist / Oceanographer in the Geospatial Analysis and Support Division of the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) at NAVOCEANO Bay, St. Louis.

Responsibilities
  • Utilize geospatial technologies, imagery collection methods, and scientific principles to develop new capabilities that support internal and external requirements.
  • Conduct shipboard surveys as directed by applicable instructions.
  • Evaluate, correlate, fuse, and present complex meteorological and oceanographic datasets in response to customer requests.
  • Design, implement, and document focused Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analysis methodologies, automated workflows, and mapping solutions, including database design and customized toolsets to increase departmental productivity.
Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct‑deposit pay program.
  • New Navy employees must successfully pass an E‑Verify employment verification check.
  • Current federal employees applying for this grade must have served at least one year at the next lower grade level (time‑in‑grade requirement).
  • Retired military members may be appointed to a civilian position when applicable under 5 U.S.C. § 3326.
  • Men born after 12‑31‑59 must register for selective service.
  • Must complete a pre‑appointment physical examination.
  • Must obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance before duty assignment.
  • Must pass a pre‑employment drug test (including marijuana) and may be subject to random testing.
  • May be required to travel domestically (CONUS) or abroad (OCONUS), and to work at remote or isolated sites, including extended periods on military or commercial aircraft.
Qualifications
  • At least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS‑11 grade level in the federal service, or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
  • Experience applying theories, principles, policies, and techniques of oceanography, hydrology, remote sensing, image processing, and geographic information systems to coastal oceanographic and/or riverine environments.
  • Experience using GIS and remote sensing tools to manipulate and evaluate oceanographic and riverine data, and to employ remote sensing exploitation techniques.
  • Experience with the tactical use of environmental data during Naval Special Warfare, Amphibious Warfare, Special Operations, and other missions where knowledge of the riverine environment is required.
  • Basic requirements for the General Physical Science Series, 1301: a degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that includes at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Basic requirements for the Meteorology Series, 1340: a degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, or another natural science major that includes at least 24 semester hours in meteorology/atmospheric science, including specified coursework in atmospheric dynamics, synoptic analysis, physical meteorology, and remote sensing, plus related physics and mathematics coursework.
  • Basic requirements for the Oceanography Series, 1360: a major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
