Senior Research Fellow – Neurosurgery (fixed‑term training contract)
Contract:
12 months, starting August 2026. The post is jointly funded by the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust and the NIHR Clinical Research Network and supports structured clinical and research training for a trainee grade.
Grants:
The role supports clinical care of neurosurgical patients in theatre, on wards and in outpatient clinics.
The role also involves the design, set‑up and conduct of neurovascular and traumatic brain injury studies at the Wessex Neurological Centre.
Responsibilities- Provide clinical care for neurosurgical patients in theatre, on wards and in outpatient clinics.
- Support clinical studies, including trial design, set‑up, recruitment, data collection and analysis.
- Develop and manage a personal research project, including pilot data, in line with the national clinical research curriculum.
- Participate in the Wessex Clinical Research Network Fellows training programme, statistics courses and related certification.
- Attend additional training, study leave and CPD as required.
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- Foundation Programme completion.
- Four months’ training in neurosurgery, neurology or neuro‑intensive care.
- Sound clinical judgement and knowledge base to apply to patient care.
- Postgraduate training (MRCS or equivalent).
- Higher degree (e.g. PhD).
- Undergraduate awards.
- Course in medical statistics.
- Additional experience in neurosurgery, neurovascular disease, traumatic brain injury and research/audit.
- Effective teamwork skills and ability to work in multi‑professional teams.
- Understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion in patient care.
- Excellent verbal and written communication in English.
- Strong organisational skills, prioritising effectively and meeting deadlines.
- Calm, compassionate and able to respond efficiently to acute neurosurgical emergencies.
- Proven ability to manage acute neurosurgical emergencies.
- Valid GCP training.
- ATLS provider certification.

Appointments are made under Trust contractual terms. Applicants requiring skilled‑worker sponsorship must meet Home Office criteria before applying.
Annual salary at a nodal pay point based on grade with any additional remuneration for extra hours, weekend or enhanced pay where applicable.
