Wildlife Scientific Collection Permit Coordinator Classification:

Olympia, Washington – Thurston County (telework up to 80% available)

As the statewide lead on Scientific Collection Permits, you will develop and maintain systems that ensure consistent permitting processes, support conservation and enforcement decisions, and provide reliable permit‑related information across the Washington wildlife programs.

• Coordinate Scientific Collection permitting, reviewing, researching, and approving or denying applications and accompanying documents in collaboration with Wildlife Program reviewers.
• Receive applications, evaluate wildlife impacts and regulatory compliance, facilitate review by subject matter experts, recommend limits on take, apply conditions, and issue final determinations in a timely manner.
• Communicate with permit applicants to ensure thorough study plans and collection methods, addressing agency feedback on wildlife impacts.
• Manage and coordinate updates and improvements to the permit process, policy, and associated systems, including development of permit policy and biological standards.
• Coordinate letters of authorization for take of protected wildlife species, including initial review, requirement development, drafting authorization letters, and managing the authorization process with agency management.

Work setting:
Office in Olympia’s Natural Resources Building or home office. Telework up to 80% of the time. Core hours Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with flexibility required for deadlines. Periodic travel for meetings, training, conferences, and occasional overnight travel may be necessary.

• Option 1:
  Two (2) years as a Fish & Wildlife Biologist 2.
• Option 2:
  Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, environmental science, or natural resources science, plus three (3) years of professional experience in wildlife or habitat management or research. Master’s degree substitutes one (1) year, Ph.D. substitutes two (2) years.
• Option 3:
  Seven (7) years of professional experience in wildlife or habitat management or research.

• Experience conducting research and interpreting wildlife policies, laws, and regulations.
• Data management skills using databases and tools such as ArcGIS, Survey 123, Microsoft Access, SQL Server.
• Ability to apply environmental regulations in coordinated decision‑making.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple assignments under time constraints.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, including formal correspondence and technical documents.
• Independent and collaborative working style.
• GIS product production and spatial analysis.
• Problem‑solving in complex dispute resolution.

• Environmental and wildlife regulations and law.
• Project management practices.
• Ecology, species distributions, and habitat associations of Washington wildlife.
• Population biology, conservation biology, and ecological systems.
• Wildlife survey, monitoring, and research techniques.
• Wildlife disease monitoring and surveillance.
• Data management, statistical and spatial data analysis, synthesis, and delivery.
• Understanding of resource management agencies’ missions and collaborative approaches.
• Conservation planning, endangered species recovery, and game species management.
