Position: Assistant Research Scientist (Toxic Substances)
Location: City of Albany

Compensation Grade: P14. Annual salary: $56,025.00 – $56,025.00. Positions with a designated work location in New York City, Nassau, Rockland, Suffolk, or Westchester Counties will receive a $4,000 annual downstate adjustment (pro‑rated for part‑time positions).

Job Summary

The Assistant Research Scientist will work within the Bureau of Toxic Substance Assessment (BTSA) in the New York State Department of Health. The role involves partnering with state and local agencies, school district personnel, and school staff to improve knowledge and awareness of school environmental health issues through the New York State School Environmental Health Program.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with schools, including public, private, tribal, and disadvantaged schools, to implement best practices in school environmental health.
  • Assist with indoor air quality assessments and prepare technical reports summarizing findings.
  • Help develop and present technical materials on ways to control, reduce, and eliminate exposures in schools.
  • Address other program focus areas, such as climate action and water quality.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and at least one year of research experience, or a Master’s degree in a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree or experience in industrial hygiene or public health.
  • Academic or working knowledge of indoor air quality.
  • Experience collecting or working with environmental data such as air sampling data.
  • Understanding of the effects of chemicals and materials on the body and the environment.
  • Knowledge of federal and state building regulations.
  • Experience working in or with K‑12 schools.
  • Experience with multidisciplinary professional teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with diverse audiences.
  • Experience preparing technical reports or data‑driven resources.
  • Strong organizational skills.
Conditions of Employment
  • Grant‑funded position requiring compliance with time‑and‑effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables.
  • Travel up to 10% of the time.
  • Option for a hybrid work schedule combining onsite and remote work.
