Position: Sanitarian Trainee (Environmental Trainee)

Responsibilities
  • Field Inspections:
    Learn about conducting inspections of public water systems to check facilities, operations, and water quality
  • Compliance Review:
    Assist in the evaluation of records, test results, and system performance to verify adherence to drinking water regulations
  • Technical Assistance:
    Provide guidance to operators, officials, and the public on water system practices and regulatory requirements
  • Plan Evaluation:
    Help with the review of water system plans, monitoring documents, and emergency procedures for completeness and accuracy
  • Data Management:
    Update electronic systems with inspection results, inventory updates, and compliance information
  • Public Outreach:
    Share information and training materials to support safe drinking water efforts in local communities
Work Schedule and Additional Information
  • Full‑time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday – Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch
  • Telework: you may have the opportunity to work from home part‑time, up to 3 days per week, provided you have a securely configured high‑speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania; if you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Wilkes‑Barre. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.

  • Salary:
    Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $45,907.00 (before taxes)
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements
  • Four years of technical experience in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or
  • A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree
Special Requirements
  • All positions require possession of an active motor vehicle license
Other Requirements
  • You must possess and maintain a REAL  passport for this position; proof of possession will be needed at the time of a conditional offer of employment
  • You must meet the PA residency requirement
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions
