Department Information

This position is only open to Colorado state residents. New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

About the Work Unit

The Water Quality Construction Section in the Environmental Programs Branch at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) exists to assist, support, and ensure uniformity with CDOT design, planning activities, construction, and maintenance, with compliance with the broad range of state, federal, and local regulations, executive orders, interagency agreements, standard operating procedures, and CDOT policies which support the protection and enhancement of the environment.

About The Position

CDOT has a vacancy for a Stormwater Management Plan (SWMP) Design Program Specialist (Environ/Protection Specialist I) that will assist with providing support to CDOT’s SWMP Design Program. This position also provides basic technical assistance to CDOT regions to aid in compliance needs and project delivery.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • Assisting in the development and maintenance of the SWMP Design Program.
  • Providing administrative and basic support for Region and Headquarters Design teams regarding SWMP design requirements.
  • Assisting with updates to the SWMP design templates in the project delivery design phase, reducing compliance risk to CDOT and associated contractors.
  • Reviewing CDOT specifications, Materials & Specifications standards and SWMP design templates to ensure these documents are clear and concise.
  • Learning to assist in the development and delivery of specialized training to CDOT SWMP designers and CDOT’s SWMP reviewers.
  • Learning and staying current on federal, state and local SWMP regulations.
  • Assisting senior staff with the CDOT Cat Ex Form 128 environmental clearance logistics.
  • Providing research for senior staff to reduce the number of overages and Change Modification Orders (CMO) on active CDOT projects by compiling quality design criteria.
  • Accompanying senior water quality staff on post construction site visits.
  • Learning the basic principles and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to support the SWMP.
  • Working at the Tom Boyce Water Quality Training Facility located at 18500

    E. Colfax Ave., Aurora, CO to assist with classes.
  • Assisting with the administration and oversight of the water quality training facility.
  • Working with the CDOT stakeholders to unify the SWMP Design and SWMP Reviewer Program classes under the Water Quality Section program.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment
  • Daytime hours Monday-Friday, but we are flexible to meet your work/life balance needs while ensuring CDOT business needs are met.
  • You will likely work a hybrid schedule with a combination of in-office and work-from-home.
  • Daytime travel during business hours to local project sites.
  • Overnight statewide travel required to attend meetings, trainings - approximately 5%.
  • Approximately 5% of time spent in the field, 95% spent in the office.
  • Required to drive CDOT vehicles.
  • Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather.
