Position Overview

The candidate that fills this position will manage the daily operations of the flow cytometry resource at the University of Minnesota‑Twin Cities as well as serve as the senior specialist. Responsibilities include quality control, setup of flow cytometers, operation of analyzers and sorters, data acquisition, analysis, and sorting. The role also involves training, troubleshooting, consultation for experimental design, and staying up to date through courses and conferences.

The position is based on campus, but remote work may be permitted with manager approval. All employees are expected to follow public health and safety procedures.

Job Responsibilities
  • Function 1 (40%) – Utilize flow cytometry cell sorters for a wide range of sample types to achieve optimal data acquisition and cell sorting performance.
  • Function 2 (20%) – Provide instruction and guidance to UFCR staff, researchers, and trained users, including scheduling, planning, and analysis of samples and addressing advanced instrumentation questions and problems.
  • Function 3 (20%) – Assist in the daily operation of the shared resource, monitoring equipment, operational supplies, and employee scheduling.
  • Function 4 (10%) – Perform technical writing and review written materials for service record‑keeping, instrument operation, and customer training.
  • Function 5 (5%) – Handle special projects as assigned.
  • Function 6 (5%) – Maintain familiarity with lab safety procedures, current research and reagent options, and conduct critical review of customer data and service‑related data using appropriate analysis tools.
Pay & Benefits

Payment Range: $86,000 ‑ $94,000 (dependent on education, qualifications, and experience)

Appointment: 100% Full‑time

About the Department

The University Flow Cytometry Resource (UFCR) is a shared resource providing high‑quality services and supporting the career goals of UFCR staff. Instrumentation includes nine analytical cytometers (Cytek Aurora and BD instruments) and four sorting systems. UFCR offers training, consultation, and for‑hire services to over 125 investigators and 300 hands‑on users annually.

Qualifications
  • Required Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in a basic science or related field.
  • 7 years of experience operating and repairing flow cytometry analysis instrumentation.
  • 5 years of experience operating droplet‑based high‑speed cell sorting instrumentation.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Independent operation of flow cytometry instrumentation, familiarity with BD FACSDiVa and Cytek Spectroflo software.
  • Broad understanding of biological systems and ability to assist research staff in optimizing results.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in flow cytometric data analysis.
  • Biomedical research laboratory experience.
  • Knowledge of online tools and resources for experimental planning.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift objects up to 40 lbs.
  • Frequent standing, walking, twisting, bending, stooping, squatting, light grasping, fine manipulation, and desk‑based computer tasks.
  • May require repetitive motion.
