About Sierra Streams Institute

Sierra Streams Institute is a watershed monitoring, research, restoration and educational group based in Nevada City, California in the Sierra Nevada foothills.

Our mission is to promote scientific knowledge and stewardship of Sierra Nevada watersheds through research, restoration, education, and community science.

Over the past two decades, SSI has grown to become a vitally important voice in the regional scientific community.

At Sierra Streams Institute, we believe in science to work on behalf of environmental and human health, and we put science in the hands of the people who need it most.

Rather than engaging in direct activism around environmental issues, we believe in “advocacy through evidence”.

Our research, data, and projects have been used by community members and agencies alike to ensure environmental management decisions are made through an equitable, data-driven, process.

Further, we blur the line between academic science and meaningful application, producing both academic journal publications and numerous unique opportunities for engaging in science education and understanding.

Job Summary

Sierra Streams Institute (SSI) seeks a Forestry Technician to assist on our Sierra Foothill Forests Climate Resilience Project, a novel forest management project focused on community-driven forest management in the wildland urban interface around Nevada City, CA. The Forestry Technician will work with the Project Lead (Forest Ecologist) in the field to collect forest data, and assist in the management of fuels treatments (mastication, hand-thinning, and prescribed fire) at our project sites on outdoor schools, BLM, and private landowner parcels.

This collected data will be used to inform landowners on data-backed outcomes and best practices to assist with continued management of fuels treatments. This opportunity offers the Technician on-the-ground forestry experience as well as coordination with contractors.

  • Work with Forest Ecologist to conduct private and school property site visits for flagging and discussions with landowners.
  • Work with Forest Ecologist to complete treatment delineation and treatment polygon boundary corrections.
  • Monitor contract work and interact with contractors regarding Scope of Work.
  • Attend Town Hall meeting project shareouts to support the project.
  • Assist volunteers with community broadcast burns and fuel reduction days.
  • Forestry data analysis and data product development support (as needed).
  • Other duties as assigned by the Forest Ecologist.
