Natural Resource Scientist
RK&K is seeking a Natural Resource Scientist with a strong interest in wetlands and field-based environmental science. This role is ideal for professionals seeking hands-on experience with wetland delineations, ecological fieldwork, environmental documentation, and regulatory compliance while working alongside experienced scientists and engineers.
Essential Functions- Assist with field investigations including wetland delineations, stream assessments, habitat surveys, and environmental monitoring
- Collect, organize, and document field and environmental data
- Support preparation of technical reports, wetland documentation, and permit applications
- Assist with regulatory compliance efforts under federal, state, and local environmental regulations (e.g., USACE, EPA, NC DEQ)
- Coordinate with project team members including scientists, engineers, and planners
- Maintain accurate field notes, data records, and project files
- Support project schedules and quality control procedures
- Participate in internal training and professional development, including wetland and ecological training modules
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, or a related field
- Two (2) + years of experience; internships, capstone projects, or field courses acceptable
- Interest in wetlands, natural resources, and environmental consulting
- Willingness and ability to perform fieldwork in varying conditions
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Internship or field experience in natural resources or environmental consulting
- Exposure to wetland/stream delineations
- Basic plant and animal species identification skills
- Familiarity with environmental regulations and permitting processes
- Experience with ecological surveys or environmental monitoring
- GIS experience (ArcGIS or similar)
- Field data collection experience
- Valid driver's license
Mix of office, field, and remote work depending on project needs. Fieldwork may include walking long distances, uneven terrain, wetland environments, and exposure to a variety of weather conditions.
