Senior Environmental Scientist - Mining Compliance

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Environmental Scientist to lead their environmental compliance efforts within the mining sector, working remotely. This position is essential for ensuring that all mining operations adhere to stringent environmental regulations and best practices. You will be responsible for developing and implementing environmental management systems, conducting impact assessments, and overseeing monitoring programs. • Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive environmental management plans for mining projects.
• Conduct Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and permits.
• Oversee environmental monitoring programs, including water quality, air emissions, and biodiversity assessments.
• Provide expert advice on environmental best practices, risk mitigation, and regulatory requirements to project teams.
• Liaise with regulatory authorities, stakeholders, and community groups on environmental matters.
• Manage environmental audits and ensure corrective actions are implemented effectively.
• Train and mentor junior environmental staff on compliance and management systems.

• Master's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or a related field.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in environmental management, with a significant portion dedicated to the mining industry .
• In-depth knowledge of South African environmental legislation (e.g., NEMA, MPRDA) and international standards.
• Proven experience in conducting EIAs and developing EMPs.
• Strong data analysis, reporting, and communication skills, essential for remote collaboration.
• Experience with environmental management software and databases is advantageous.
• Ability to work autonomously and manage multiple projects effectively in a remote setting .
