Do you enjoy turning complex earth science challenges into practical solutions?
We're looking for an Earth Scientist to join our Inland Salinity team on a 12-month fixed-term contract, covering a secondment opportunity for the current role holder.
This is a varied and hands-on role focused on understanding and managing the environmental risks associated with rising saline mine water. You'll work with colleagues, consultants, regulators and other partners to gather evidence, assess risks and help shape future interventions that protect people and the environment.
You'll often become involved at the early stages of projects, where the path forward is not always clear. This means you'll need to be comfortable investigating issues, identifying opportunities, bringing together information from different sources and helping projects move forward.
Working across Yorkshire and the Midlands, you'll analyse hydrogeological, geochemical and environmental data, scope technical studies, manage consultant-led work and provide clear technical advice to support decision-making.
This is a role where your technical expertise, judgement and ability to work effectively with others will be just as important as your scientific knowledge.
AboutThe Role
We're looking for someone with a strong earth science background and the ability to apply their knowledge to real-world environmental challenges.
You may be a hydrogeologist, geochemist or earth scientist who has developed practical experience within the water, environmental, mining, ground engineering or consultancy sectors. What matters most is your ability to take technical information, understand the bigger picture and translate it into proportionate, practical solutions.
You'll be naturally curious and proactive, comfortable working in situations where not all the answers are immediately available. You enjoy investigating problems, building relationships and using your initiative to make progress.
You’ll also bring:
- Experience interpreting hydrogeological, geochemical or environmental data and using evidence to support decision-making.
- The ability to scope technical investigations, studies and solutions to address environmental risks.
- Experience managing consultants, contractors or technical specialists to deliver high-quality outcomes.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build credibility and influence a wide range of stakeholders.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to balance competing priorities.
- A degree in geoscience, environmental science or a related discipline.
This is a unique opportunity to work on an emerging environmental challenge with national significance.
You’ll join a collaborative team where you’ll have the opportunity to influence projects from the earliest stages, work alongside experts from a range of disciplines and help shape solutions that make a lasting difference for people and the environment in mining areas.
Interested?
If you're an earth scientist who combines technical expertise with sound judgement, practical problem-solving and the ability to bring people with you, we'd love to hear from you.
