Job Description & How to Apply Below
Whether your career with Connexa is in the field or the office, you'll find we adapt to the ever-changing workplace.
We're looking for an intermediate Environmental Monitor / Coordinator based in Edmonton, AB to lead environmental monitoring and coordination on construction, mining, hydro and pipeline projects across Central and Northern Alberta. You'll also work as a Resource Specialist on biophysical, wildlife and fisheries work, act as Field Lead when needed, and mentor junior field staff. Ideally, you're an experienced Alberta field professional who wants to grow with an innovative, forward-thinking company.
The Work:
This is a hybrid role, about 70% in the field and 30% working from a home office in the Edmonton area. You'll:
Coordinate and deliver environmental monitoring on multi-disciplinary construction, mining, hydro and pipeline projects
Lead monitoring on active construction sites, working directly with contractors and client representatives to make sure work complies with Alberta permits, approvals and environmental protection plans
Work as a Resource Specialist on biophysical assessments, wildlife surveys, water quality and fisheries work, and act as Field Lead on these assignments from time to time
Mentor junior environmental staff in the field and help them build their monitoring, assessment and reporting skills
Work with Connexa team members, client field representatives, contractors and Alberta regulators, and explain monitoring findings and compliance issues clearly to non-technical audiences
Prepare monitoring reports and correspondence for client and regulatory review
Complete office reporting, QA/QC, data entry and timely submission of field data
Attend meetings and training sessions as needed
Support recruitment and onboarding of junior field staff where applicable
Technical strengths:
You'll have intermediate-level expertise in one or more of these areas, and working knowledge across most:
Environmental monitoring and construction inspection
Regulatory compliance monitoring (e.g., Environmental Protection Plan implementation)
Erosion and sediment control
Soil sampling (baseline and contaminated)
Air quality
Wildlife sweeps (year-round identification of dens, nests, mineral licks and other key features)
Water quality monitoring (turbidity)
Fish salvage and habitat assessment
Pipeline HDD monitoring
Field schedule and conditions:
Field shifts are typically 2–10 days, with longer shifts possible, and include overnight stays in hotels or camps
Projects are mostly in Central and Northern Alberta, with possible travel elsewhere in Western Canada
Expect to be available for field work up to 20 days a month, including up to 2 weekends a month, with 10–11 days off a month (excluding vacation and personal days)
Work in remote locations and challenging conditions, including muddy roads, steep terrain, dense vegetation and snow
Walk extended distances and carry field equipment, such as soil sampling tools, weighing up to 30 lb
Drive light-duty trucks, ATVs, UTVs and trailers
Use navigation and data collection tools such as Garmin GPS, Avenza, Collector and similar platforms
What you bring to the table:
A diploma or bachelor's degree in conservation biology, land reclamation, environmental science, natural resource management, forestry or a related field
5–9 years of relevant experience in Alberta, with intermediate-level technical and coordination skills
An Alberta professional designation (e.g., P.Biol. or P.Ag.), or clear eligibility to obtain one
Experience acting as a Field Lead
Intermediate to advanced reporting skills
A track record of mentoring and guiding junior staff in the field
Confidence working with clients, contractors and Alberta regulators, and making sound in-field decisions independently
A valid driver's licence
Experience working as a Qualified Aquatic Environmental Specialist (QAES) or Qualified Wetland Science Practitioner (QWSP) is an asset
Electrofishing certification is an asset
A love for being on the road and working in both natural and construction…
