Position: Clinical Security Officer I - Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Fort Logan (Denver)

Position Eligibility

This position is open only to Colorado state residents.

Full-Time & Part-Time, On-Site

Shift work – varying shifts at a 24/7 facility.

This position is an in-person position requiring shift work.

About the Unit

The Safety Department exists to maintain the safety and security of the CMHHIFL campus. Duties include maintaining a safe environment for patients, personnel, and visitors; providing assistance to clinical staff; managing aggressive or assaultive individuals; and monitoring laws and regulations. The department supports patient care and safety of buildings, grounds, equipment, occupants, and internal physical systems, and resolves situations that pose threats to life, health or property.

Job

Assignment / Purpose of Position

Ensure a safe work environment through adherence to CMHHIFL/CDHS policies, Joint Commission Standards, Life Safety Codes, and Colorado statutes. Respond to crisis situations, assist nursing and clinical staff for a safe environment, perform environmental safety checks, and facilitate on‑unit/campus transports.

Job Duties
  • Respond to hospital staff requests for assistance.
  • Perform supportive actions and approved physical intervention techniques as necessary.
  • Maintain safety by responding to psychiatric emergencies and non-emergency situations.
  • Exercise sound judgment and emotional control when evaluating risk; participate in de‑fusing and debriefing incidents.
  • Use effective communication, Verbal Defense Interventions (VDI), and Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) skills with patients and staff.
  • Support patient transport needs when appropriate.
  • Provide security and enforcement by patrol and observation to detect, prevent, and control incidents.
  • Document reports of criminal activity.
  • Perform traffic surveillance and parking control.
  • Maintain hospital safety through routine physical checks.
  • Perform monthly safety inspections of clinical units.
  • Identify security violations and hazards; take necessary actions to correct them.
  • Conduct monthly fire drills and evaluate staff training.
  • Transport/escort clients and staff to and from various locations on and off hospital grounds.
  • Enter security-sensitive areas (e.g., After‑Hours Pharmacy, Central Medical Supply, etc.) with or without staff assistance.
  • Communicate with other police agencies; act as liaison between Fort Logan and external law‑enforcement.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
Preferred Qualifications
  • College education in behavioral health or justice‑related field.
  • Experience in secure residential or behavioral health setting with adjudicated/detained individuals.
  • Experience facilitating psycho educational groups/working with adolescents with trauma.
  • Experience with verbal de‑escalation and motivational techniques.

Work Schedule
  • Shift work – varying shifts at a 24/7 facility.
Conditions of Employment
  • Pre‑employment criminal background check.
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license or non‑restricted U.S. driver license.
  • State residency required at time of application and throughout employment.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • May be required to provide local transport for patient care.
  • Travel to assigned trainings and/or work sites.
  • Must report without delay to provide emergency services.
  • Must pass Tuberculosis (TB) test.
