Location: Stringtown

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibility involving the coordination, supervision and direction of a correctional security program in a state adult correctional facility.

Typical Functions
  • Coordinates and supervises or directs correctional security functions and activities at an adult correctional facility; may serve as a shift supervisor with responsibility for all assigned units and functions in a large facility or as the chief of security in a smaller facility.
  • May serve as commander of a correctional emergency response team; schedules training exercises and coordinates associated activities.
  • Conducts special investigations, particularly concerning incidents that occur during assigned shifts.
  • Coordinates and supervises security, riot and escape procedures, including procedures for inmate counts and searches for escape materials and contraband.
  • Prepares daily work schedules for security personnel and maintains appropriate records concerning employees and residents.
  • Conducts inspections of assigned staff at the beginning of shifts to assure proper attire and fitness for duty; makes periodic inspections of posts to assure proper maintenance; prepares administrative reports concerning the operation of the shift.
  • Acts as liaison to local law‑enforcement agencies; provides information and file changes; arranges court appearances.
  • Serves as a member of the administrative institutional staff; participates in the formulation of institutional policies, rules and regulations.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies

The role requires knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques; of staffing patterns and scheduling; of discipline methods for inmates under restraint; of inmate psychology; of firearms use and care; of restraint methods and techniques; fundamentals of English usage; basic math; and report‑writing techniques. Abilities include establishing effective working relationships, following oral and written instructions, gathering and organizing facts, completing clear and concise reports, evaluating situations rapidly, adopting effective courses of action, exercising alertness and acting promptly in emergencies, communicating security techniques, maintaining firearms proficiency, and managing conflict resolution within the inmate population.

Education and Experience

Three years of correctional or security experience with a government or private corrections agency is required. Statutory requirements include a minimum age of twenty (20) years; possession of thirty (30) semester hours from an accredited college or university or a high‑school diploma or GED equivalent; and completion of a Department‑approved training course within the first six (6) months. Successful completion of the GED test must meet standards set by the Oklahoma Department of Education.

Special Requirements
  • Be of good moral character.
  • Complete the required correctional officers and guards training program before going on duty alone.
  • Meet an annual physical fitness assessment according to departmental guidelines.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.
  • Undergo drug testing.
  • Be willing and able to work any assigned shift or day of the week.
  • May be designated as a peace officer; must meet all Training and Screening requirements from the Department and the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training.
  • Meet all background check requirements, including no convictions listed in 57 O.S. 510, 57 O.S. 589.C, 70 O.S. 3311, 21 O.S. 1283.B, 18 U.S.C. 922, 63 O.S. § 427.8 and the applicable state and federal statutes.
