Police Sergeant serves as a member of the Public Safety Department management team in charge of team‑based community policing. The role is focused on partnering with Student Life, Residential Life, and other campus units to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all members of the university community.
Responsibilities- Protect life and property of the university community.
- Ensure enforcement of state laws and university regulations, maintaining up‑to‑date knowledge of applicable statutes and department procedures.
- Assist and instruct subordinates, with a focus on officers serving probationary periods.
- Patrol campus regularly and visit assigned officers to promote efficiency.
- Monitor and supervise the dispatch center and Simmons Hall Security Booth to ensure effective communications.
- Investigate all incidents involving on‑duty department members.
- Conduct roll calls, inspections of assigned officers, and perform crime prevention programs.
- Assume command as Officer‑In‑Charge of shift operations when no superior officer is present.
- Provide leadership, management, and mentoring, including training, motivation, evaluation, and discipline of assigned officers.
- Maintain records, logs, and files; submit and sign reports from subordinates; report misconduct or violations in writing.
- Coordinate with partner law‑enforcement and public‑safety agencies (e.g., College of The Fenway Police, Boston Police, Massachusetts State Police, Transit Police, Boston Fire, EMS).
- Assist community members with civil and criminal court processes.
- Graduate from a Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) approved police academy or receive a permanent exemption from MPTC.
- Obtain and maintain POST certification, Special State Police powers (M.G.L. ch.22 s.63), and Suffolk County Deputy Sheriff powers.
- Be eligible for appointment as a Special State Police Officer under M.G.L. ch.22 s.63.
- Have at least two years of police work experience if completed an out‑of‑state recruit academy.
- Hold a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Be at least 21 years old.
- Possess a Massachusetts Class A License to Carry and a Massachusetts driver’s license.
- Pass a comprehensive background check, psychological exam, drug test, and pre‑employment medical exam.
- Previous law‑enforcement experience, preferably on a college or university campus.
- Bachelor’s degree (preferred).
- Active certification in CPR, First Aid, or AED.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and knowledge of the ARMS system.

- Starting salary: $33.75 per hour (range $21.20–$34.47 per hour).
