Position: Student Patrol Officer (STUDENT/WORK STUDY)

Extended Site Maintenance

Job Summary

This is an hourly position for current registered students (work-study available).

As part of the Department of Public Safety (DPS) team, Student Patrol Officers (SPOs) serve as leaders by offering front line customer service and support to students, faculty, staff and visitors of the University of Michigan-Flint campus. SPOs provide positive interactions through operation of campus Safe Ride services, facilitation of found property services, and serving as the eyes, ears and smiles of the Department of Public Safety while representing themselves and the University of Michigan-Flint in a professional and courteous manner.

Responsibilities*
  • Student guards will operate Safe Ride van providing campus transportation within the established geofence.
  • Student guards will patrol, observe, and report occurrences in and about the campus, via portable radio unit, to the Communications Officer. Including any criminal damage or activity found in their area of assignment, such as: broken windows, damaged furniture, or any other vandalized or damaged University property.
  • Prepare daily logs.
  • Uphold all federal, state, and local laws in addition to University rules and regulations in all areas of University jurisdictions.
  • Initiate and submit reports.
  • Assist in the orderly evacuation of residence halls and university buildings, in the event of a fire and/or fire alarm or other emergency when requested by campus security officers.
  • Assist students, Residential Life staff, Campus Security Officers, and Emergency Medical personnel in emergencies when appropriate or helpful.
  • Promote and provide safeguard services to the campus community.
  • Make frequent fire prevention checks which include: checking fire alarm pull boxes and fire extinguishers, reporting missing or burnt-out exit signs, missing fire extinguishers, and all unsafe conditions.
  • Other duties as assigned by DPS supervision.
Required Qualifications *
  • Current registered student at a college/university- open to students outside of UM-Flint.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • No arrests or convictions.
  • Knowledge of the University of Michigan-Flint and the surrounding community.
  • Possess initiative, attention to detail, and a positive attitude.
  • Desire to assist others and provide excellent customer service as an individual and as part of a team.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule. Available shifts vary: days, afternoons, evenings, weekends.
Modes of Work

Onsite
The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence. Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan.

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes .

Additional Information
  • Work Study students preferred, but Work Study not required.
  • Must be able to work at least 4-8 hours a week.
  • All members of the Department of Public Safety (DPS) are Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. As such, you are required to report Clery reportable offenses that come to your attention. DPS employees are required to complete Clery Compliance Training within the first 14 days of employment and annually thereafter.

The University of Michigan conducts background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background checks. Background checksare performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
