Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences - Harlan County

Job Summary: The Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences will develop, implement, and evaluate a plan of work based on locally identified needs to improve the quality of living for families & individuals in Harlan County. The agent will plan and implement educational programs that focus on healthy choices, nurturing families, embracing life as you age, securing financial stability, promoting healthy homes and communities, accessing nutritious food, and empowering community leaders.

They will develop expertise and serve as a resource in family and consumer sciences areas including food and nutrition; family resource management; human development and family relations; health, safety and wellness; leadership development; clothing and textiles; housing and the environment; home-based and microbusiness. Additionally, the agent will lead leadership programs such as Kentucky Extension Homemakers to develop personal and organizational leadership skills.

Physical Requirements: Job-related travel including overnight stays; visit clients at sites throughout the county (including farms); stand/walk for long periods; handle objects up to 25 lbs.

Work Schedule: Monday‑Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with evenings and weekends as needed; most weeks will exceed 40 hours.

Preferred Education/

Experience:

Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in a Family & Consumer Sciences discipline (e.g., Nutrition, Human Development, Family Studies, Early Childhood Education, Dietetics, Human Nutrition, Community Food Services, Food Science, Merchandising, Hospitality, Tourism, Leadership Development, Social Work, Nursing, etc.).

Required Background Checks: State law requires a national and state criminal background check and a letter from the Cabinet for Health and Family Services confirming the employee is clear of substantiated child abuse or neglect findings.
