The CoC and Homeless Programs Unit within the Homeless Services Division of Housing & Neighborhood Preservation works every day to ensure individuals and families experiencing homelessness can access safe shelter and pathways to stable housing. The Coordinated Assessment (CA) Team is one of three specialized teams in this unit and plays a vital role in helping our community members move toward housing stability.

We are seeking a Diversion Case Manager who is passionate about helping households avoid or quickly exit homelessness. This position is ideal for someone who excels at creative problem-solving, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and values compassionate, person-centered service.

About the Role

As a Diversion Case Manager, you will be one of the first points of contact for individuals and families seeking assistance within the Virginia Beach Homeless Response System. You will:

• Conduct thorough assessments with households to understand their unique needs and housing barriers

• Use creative and empathetic approaches to help clients identify safe, alternative housing options

• Mediate with family members, friends, or other support networks to negotiate temporary or long-term housing solutions

• Coordinate with community agencies and service providers to ensure clients receive comprehensive and timely support

• Accurately enter client information into the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS)

• Provide compassionate, trauma-informed interactions with every household you serve

• Drive a City vehicle as needed to perform job-related duties

• Knowledge of best practices related to homelessness, housing programs, and community resources

• A commitment to empathy, dignity, and respect in all client interactions

MINIMUMS:
Any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to four (4) years in a human services field or fields providing experience in human services/direct services/case management. Must have a current and valid drivers license. All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Work hours and work locations may be adjusted to meet client, city or community needs and situations, including some weekends, some evenings, work from home, alternating days in the office, and office sharing.
