This position is a direct care/essential role that provides direct and engaging supervision of youth in Division of Youth Services (DYS) State Operated Secure Facilities. Responsibilities include safety and security, youth center programming, documentation, and organizational accountability. Positions may require overtime on a rotating basis, based on business needs.
Responsibilities- Provide direct care, safety, security, and supervision of adjudicated and/or pre‑adjudicated youth in a secure setting
- Supervise youth or groups of youth during daily activities
- Support and enforce behavioral management plans (Behavioral Contracts, Growth & Change Plans)
- Intervene in crisis situations, perform de‑escalation and, when necessary, use physical response/restraint
- Conduct searches and document all incidents
- Youth Center Programming
- Implement and follow the Youth Center’s behavioral management program
- Teach, coach, and redirect youth within the program
- Support DYS initiatives and strategies related to youth programming and crisis intervention
- Documentation, Recording, and Reporting
- Record observations of youth behavior and program responses in appropriate logs and databases
- Organizational Accountability
- Model and support a positive, respectful cultural climate
- Adhere to CDHS Code of Conduct, DYS Compliance Review Standards, and all CDHS and DYS policies
- Promote a trauma‑responsive environment that values growth and change
- Training
- Complete DYS Pre‑Service Training Academy, Youth Center training, and orientation
- Maintain and support the Division’s behavior management and intervention strategies
- Other Duties as Assigned
- Travel for training and alternate work sites may be required
- High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
- One (1) year of professional experience in a field related to the work assigned to the position
- Additional appropriate education may substitute for required experience on a year‑for‑year basis
- College education in behavioral health or juvenile justice related fields
- Experience working with adjudicated and/or detained youth within a secure residential facility or a behavioral health setting
- Experience facilitating psycho educational groups
- Education or experience working with adolescents with trauma
- Experience mentoring or coaching youth in positive leadership roles
- Experience with verbal de‑escalation and motivational techniques
- Relevant years of state service experience
- Skill in conflict management
- Strong work ethic, integrity, and dependability
- Sound judgment and decision‑making skills
- Self‑control, composure, and ability to manage stressful situations
- Clear verbal communication and respectful manner
- Ability to identify and act on changes, hazards, or potential security breaches and communicate pertinent information
- Ability to document information accurately and concisely
- Minimum age 21 with no felony convictions or history of domestic violence
- Valid, unrestricted Colorado driver’s license
- Shift work subject to assigned schedule (evenings, nights, weekends, holidays)
- May be required to perform overtime and work in inclement weather
- Must pass comprehensive background investigations, including CBI, FBI, Diana Screen, and additional screening tools required for work with minors
- Continued employment contingent upon successful completion of DYS Pre‑Service Training Academy, Field Training Program, and mandatory annual training
- Flu and other state‑mandated vaccinations required
