ADULT PROTECTIVE INVESTIGATOR -
This professional position investigates allegations of abuse, neglect, self‑neglect, and financial exploitation against vulnerable adults. Clients served include those residing in the community and alternative care facilities.
What You Will Do- Be part of a team dedicated to protecting Florida’s vulnerable adults by meeting the nationally leading standards for Adult Protective Services investigations and protections.
- Ensure the vulnerable adult’s safety comes first.
- Assess safety concerns and mental capacity by meeting with the vulnerable adult within 24 hours of receiving a report.
- When necessary, coordinate emergency services including medical evaluations, temporary placement, and court intervention.
- Investigate allegations of abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation and work to prevent recurrence.
- Gather critical information through interviews, observations, and analysis of records.
- Coordinate with state agencies, law enforcement, and prosecutors to provide justice for vulnerable adults.
- Connect vulnerable adults with agency and community resources to improve their quality of life.
- Build relationships with organizations involved in adult protective investigations.
- A high school diploma or GED equivalent AND four years of law enforcement experience or active military service. OR
- An associate degree or 60+ credit hours from an accredited college or university AND two years of professional work experience OR two years of law enforcement experience OR active military service. OR
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Examples of professional work experience that may satisfy the required experience include:
Guardian Ad Litem, Family Support Worker, Group Home Worker, Teacher’s Assistant or Aide, Therapeutic Assistant, Family Intervention Specialist, Home Health Aide, Nurse (LPN or RN), Nursing Facility Assistant, EMT, or other welfare, education or medical professionals who work in high‑paced, high‑stress environments requiring critical decision‑making.
- Valid driver license and possession of an operational private vehicle. Proof of vehicle registration and insurance coverage must be provided within 30 days of employment.
- Ability to attend a 6‑8‑week mandatory training course.
- Knowledge, skills, and abilities essential for the role include emergency communication, interview techniques, family dynamics, research skills, assessment of service needs, report writing, legal knowledge, evidence synthesis, organizational planning, communication, computer proficiency, and physical agility for field work.
- This position requires night, weekend, and holiday work and is designated as an essential position.
- Incumbents are expected to work during emergencies or natural disasters and may need to work before, during, and beyond normal hours.
- Incumbents may be exposed to hazardous conditions in the field.
All candidates must successfully complete a state and national criminal history check, including fingerprinting for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Employment may be terminated if background results are disqualified. Employees will be retained in the state and national RAPBACK program to receive real‑time arrest notifications.
