Caseworker I / Social Service Worker – A dynamic role in the Utah Division of Child & Family Services (DCFS) focused on protecting children and families and supporting reunification and permanency goals.
Key Responsibilities- Investigate reports of abuse, exploitation, and neglect; assess safety, risk, strengths, and barriers and determine appropriate actions governing a family's situation.
- Work with families to create plans for children’s safety and for ongoing services.
- Coordinate and refer services to children and families offered by community resources, placement providers, collateral agencies, courts, and partners.
- Supervise visits between parents and children to ensure safety.
- Conduct in‑home visits to assess safety and track progress.
- Facilitate Child and Family Team Meetings with the family, their formal and informal supports.
- Testify in court hearings regarding actions, findings, procedures, and protocols.
- Prepare detailed case documentation that includes intake records, investigation summaries, assessments of safety, risk, family functioning, service plans, court reports, case history and activity logs.
- Perform 24‑hour on‑call services as needed under supervisor’s direction.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Understands human development across the lifespan and available resources in the community; able to provide culturally responsive support and interventions.
- Interacts professionally with all levels of management while managing a diverse workload and challenging situations.
- Displays sensitivity, tact, and professionalism in dealing with people.
- Communicates effectively, clearly, and concisely both verbally and in writing.
- Has four years of full‑time education OR professional work experience related to working with children, parents, and/or families, OR a combination of education and experience equal to four years.
- Possesses a current valid Utah driver’s license.
- Holds an SSW or higher licensure in good standing (required by statute UCA
58-60-103). - Understands human development across the lifespan and available resources in the community; able to provide culturally responsive support and interventions.
- Interacts professionally with all levels of management while managing a diverse workload and challenging situations.
- Displays sensitivity, tact, and professionalism in dealing with people.
- Communicates effectively, clearly, and concisely both verbally and in writing.
- Has four years of professional work experience related to working with children, parents, and/or families or a combination of education and experience equal to four years.
- Possesses a current valid Utah driver’s license.

- Department of Human Resource Management rules regarding promotions and transfers apply to current employees.
- Travel required; personal vehicle may be used; approved mileage reimbursable through State Finance.
- All DCFS job offers are contingent upon passing a Background Screening Application (BSA).
- Must have a valid Utah driver’s license.
- Hybrid work eligibility is determined by agency management and may change at any time.
- Employees must physically work within the State of Utah boundaries.
- The job requires moderate physical exertion: standing, walking over rough surfaces, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, and lifting moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.).
- High risk: potential for dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations such as working in extreme outdoor weather or at great heights.
- Special risks that may require safety precautions, such as entering client homes or exposure to contagious diseases or chemicals.
