Posted Internally and Externally Buncombe County offers in-office, hybrid, and remote positions. Employees in positions that are approved for remote work must work at a location within a 2-hour drive from the position's assigned Buncombe County facility.
** Buncombe County is hiring an Income Maintenance Caseworker III in our Adult Medicaid program. This position reports directly to an Income Maintenance Supervisor II and is part of a specialized unit focused on Long Term Care, Special Assistance, Community Alternatives Program (CAP), and Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE). The selected candidate will join a team of six (6) caseworkers within a larger unit of eleven (11) experienced staff who manage complex adult program eligibility and ongoing case maintenance.
**** The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a hybrid work arrangement that includes both in-office and remote work based on operational needs, training progression, and demonstrated reliability.
**** This role is responsible for managing an active caseload of approximately 225 case heads involving complex eligibility determinations and ongoing case management. Core duties include processing applications, completing recertifications and reviews, handling program transfers, and maintaining accurate and timely case actions in accordance with state policy and federal regulations. The position requires strong policy interpretation skills, organization, and the ability to independently prioritize workload in a high-volume environment with multiple deadlines.
**** While supervisory support and team collaboration are readily available, the role is best suited for candidates who are self-directed, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing complex caseloads with a high level of accountability.
**** There are no specific degree requirements for this position. Prior experience with Medicaid eligibility, adult programs, or complex case management are strongly preferred due to the nature of the caseload.

**** Purpose of the position:
** The purpose of this position is to ensure all eligible individuals receive timely public assistance benefits by determining or re-determining eligibility of Buncombe County residents applying for public assistance across multiple Income Maintenance programs.
** Minimum Education, Training and/or Experience (required at time of hire):
** Associate’s degree in Human Services Technology, Social Services, Paralegal Technology, Business Administration, Secretarial Science, or a closely related curriculum and three (3) years of paraprofessional, clerical, or other public contact experience which included negotiating, interviewing, explaining information, gathering, and compiling of data, analysis of data and/or performance of mathematical, legal tasks or determining eligibility; or graduation from high school and four (4) years of paraprofessional, clerical, or other public contact experience which included negotiating, interviewing, explaining information, gathering, and compiling of data, analysis of data and/or performance of mathematical, legal tasks or determining eligibility;
or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
