Software Development Engineer; Hybrid @ Bellevue, WA or Remote @ Florida

Overview

The Offer Up Consumer team is responsible for the key infrastructure that allows users to efficiently post items on our platform, then search and display those items for potential buyers. The team leverages technologies and workflows to provide a meaningful user experience and the core foundation and data used by the rest of the application. Ownership includes homefeed, search, and the item catalog.

The team manages some of the highest RPS and TPS services within Offer Up, with opportunities to grow and evolve beyond current capabilities.

As a Staff Software Development Engineer, you will own features from concept to delivery, write well-architected and thoroughly tested code, and roll out features by analyzing metrics. You will also work with cross-functional team members and grow the team as both a technical lead and individual contributor.

• Develop a technical strategy for our team
• Develop highly scalable real-time microservices with reliability, low latency, and monitoring
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement new features
• Collaborate with Offer Up-wide engineering teams to surface pain points, develop solutions, and evangelize best practices
• Identify when to replace or rebuild legacy systems
• Support, mentor, and help other engineers
• Participate in a reasonable on-call rotation with the team
• Collaborate with stakeholders to drive features and assess timelines
• Help maintain code quality in existing applications
• Create solutions or frameworks that make other team members faster and more effective
• Become an SME for team ownership areas

• 8+ years professional software engineering experience
• Experience performing data analysis and translating results into business recommendations
• Experience with data-driven applications at scale
• Judgment to balance engineering improvements with business needs
• Experience developing short- and long-term visions for services/features
• Experience guiding and mentoring junior engineers
• Strong coding skills in Java (required) and knowledge of object-oriented design and microservices architecture
• Experience with AWS and other cloud infrastructures
• Hands-on experience designing and building microservices and scalable distributed systems
• Strong knowledge of data structures and object-oriented design
• Experience with load balancing and handling large data traffic
• Desire to learn and thrive in a fast-moving, continuous development environment
• B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or equivalent experience

• Experience with Open Search or Elasticsearch
• Hands-on experience with search systems

Compensation Range: $210,000 - $240,000

Offer Up offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package with equity. Salaries are determined by factors including education, experience, knowledge, skills, and geography.

Benefits (all US roles): health insurance, healthcare savings and spending accounts, retirement savings (401(k) with match), life insurance, disability benefits, paid time off for sick leave, family/medical leave, vacation, and 12 company holidays. Vacation is flexible; generally 3-5 weeks per year. Sick time is 12 days per year (pro-rated if start date is not January
