OAS Engineer

We’re hiring an OpenAPI (OAS) Engineer to own and evolve the systems that power our API Explorer and API Designer—two of the most critical surfaces in the Read Me product. This role sits at the intersection of developer experience, API design, and product engineering. You’ll shape how thousands of companies design, validate, and interact with their APIs, and define how APIs should feel.

Read Me helps more than 5,000 leading startups and tech companies build beautiful, personalized, and interactive developer hubs. Our tools help teams deliver a better developer experience and make their products and APIs easier to use.

As a key member of a small, collaborative team, you’ll:

• Own the API Explorer and API Designer tools.
• Lead the OAS pipeline: parsing, validating, transforming, and rendering OpenAPI specs.
• Shape the technical vision for API surfaces as the landscape evolves (new spec versions, AI‑assisted workflows, shifting expectations).
• Deeply consider the developer experience, building simple, elegant interfaces.

Day‑to‑day, you’ll:

• Ship meaningful improvements early, visible to customers before the full vision is complete.
• Define a technical roadmap for OAS‑powered surfaces that the team can pursue together.
• Make major architectural decisions and decide what to evolve or reimagine.
• Stay ahead of industry shifts and keep Read Me at the forefront.

• Deep familiarity with OpenAPI/Swagger.
• Strong JavaScript/Type Script experience.
• Experience building or working with API explorers or clients.
• Knowledge of authentication flows (OAuth, API keys, SSO), REST API design patterns, JSON Schema, and validation systems.
• Comfort debugging real API requests (headers, payloads, errors).
• Familiarity with front‑end systems (React, rendering structured data).
• Experience designing developer‑facing tools is a big plus.

• Month 1:
  Learn how Read Me ingests and renders OpenAPI specs; ship first improvements.
• Within a few months:
  Own parts of the Explorer/Designer experience, identify gaps, become the go‑to resource for API‑related decisions.
• Year 1:
  Define the direction of API tooling at Read Me, ship major improvements used by thousands of developers daily, shape how modern APIs are designed and consumed.
