Lead Product Engineer (Full Stack)

This role is heavily backend focused (roughly 70% backend / 30% frontend), and is part of the CoCounsel for Accounting team, formed from the acquisition of Materia. The primary objective is to design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs that power AI‑driven accounting workflows, while also contributing across the stack when needed.

• Design, develop, and ship end‑to‑end Python‑based backend systems using FastAPI, Django, Flask or similar frameworks.
• Build scalable distributed services and robust APIs that support customer‑facing product features.
• Develop and maintain generative AI services, accounting research tools, and workflow automation features.
• Own complex multi‑month projects from ideation through launch, including testing, measuring impact, and iterating.
• Contribute to front‑end development using React, Next.js, Type Script, and Tailwind CSS to connect interfaces to backend services.
• Identify bottlenecks, optimize speed, scalability, and responsiveness across the full stack.
• Serve as a technical leader: prioritize work, scope timelines, guide engineers, enforce best practices, and collaborate with product, design, and AI specialists.
• Mentor junior and mid‑level engineers through code reviews and technical guidance.
• Champion high engineering standards for reliability, API design, and system performance.

• 7+ years of experience building web applications at scale, with deep backend expertise and practical front‑end skills.
• Proficiency in Python and backend frameworks such as FastAPI, Flask, or Django, and experience designing scalable APIs and services.
• Experience with React, Next.js, and Type Script for front‑end contributions.
• Strong product mindset: relish shipping features end‑to‑end, collaborating closely with product managers, designers, and engineers.
• Excellent debugging skills and a performance‑oriented mindset.
• Experience working in a startup or fast‑paced environment is a plus.
• Optional: background in building AI‑native products, familiarity with LLMs or prompt engineering, cloud infrastructure, and testing methodologies.
