AI Engineer, Software Engineer, Cloud Engineer - Software
Waybetter Marketing is a marketing agency in Columbia, Maryland. We help colleges and universities grow enrollment through hyper-personalized, data-driven campaigns. We’re seeking an AI Engineer with 6+ years of experience to build the AI-powered systems that automate and scale our internal work, and to build them so a small, mixed-skill team can maintain and extend them.
This is a hybrid role: you’ll design and build the automations and own the technical foundation they run on. We favor approachable, sustainable tooling over solutions only a specialist can touch.
This role requires you to live within commuting distance to Columbia, Maryland.
- Competitive salary + bonus
- Hybrid schedule (whole team works remotely on Wednesdays and Fridays)
- Health insurance
- 401(k) with a guaranteed 3% profit sharing
- Paid parental leave
- Free snacks
- Design and build AI-powered workflows and agents that automate multi-step internal processes end-to-end.
- Stand up and operate the supporting infrastructure on AWS, including deployment, scaling, and isolation between workloads.
- Build systems that retain context reliably and recover cleanly when something fails mid-run.
- Ensure strong separation of client and project data so information is never exposed across clients.
- Build monitoring, logging, and error handling that make issues easy to detect and understand — including by non-engineers.
- Establish a healthy build-test-deploy workflow with controlled promotion to production and clear rollback paths.
- Choose tooling and patterns that keep our systems maintainable, favoring approachable approaches over unnecessary complexity.
- Partner with marketing and operations stakeholders to turn business processes into reliable automations.
- 6+ years in software, data, or AI/ML engineering, or a comparable track record of building production systems. A CS/Engineering degree is welcome but not required.
- Hands‑on experience building LLM‑powered applications or AI agents — prompting, tool calling, and multi‑step workflows.
- Proficiency with at least one modern AI agent framework or workflow‑automation platform.
- Strong Python skills, plus experience with cloud services (preferably AWS), Git, and CI/CD.
- Solid grasp of API integration and connecting systems to external tools and data.
- Sound judgment about when to write code versus configure a platform, and the ability to make technical decisions legible to non-engineers.
- Production experience with monitoring/tracing for AI systems.
- Familiarity with RAG, vector stores, and semantic search.
- Multi-tenant systems and data isolation patterns.
- SQL and cloud data warehouses.
- Background in marketing, agency, or higher-education environments.
Only applicants in the Baltimore/DC region will be considered. Long‑term remote work arrangements are not available.
