Some careers shine brighter than others.

If you’re looking for a career that will help you stand out, join HSBC, and fulfil your potential. Whether you want a career that could take you to the top, or simply take you in an exciting new direction, HSBC offers opportunities, support and rewards that will take you further.

Your career opportunity

At HSBC, we’re building the next generation of secure, scalable, and resilient messaging platforms to connect our global business. We value difference, succeed together, take responsibility, and get it done—every day.

We’re seeking a Technical Lead to guide a team of talented messaging platform engineers. You’ll be responsible for the technical direction, delivery, and operational excellence of our messaging solutions, ensuring they meet the highest standards of reliability, security, and scalability.

You will be part of a global team reporting to the Messaging Platforms Sub-Value Stream Tech Lead and will have the opportunity to work with engineers from multiple geographies.

What you’ll do
  • Lead the end-to-end delivery of high-quality backend services and application components, meeting requirements, timelines, and Group/local engineering standards.
  • Design and build distributed systems, translating functional requirements into technical solutions while considering dependencies and non-functional requirements (resilience, performance, security, operability).
  • Set and govern engineering quality standards (definition of done, code quality, testing, release readiness); review and challenge designs and implementations to ensure alignment with HSBC and industry standards.
  • Promote innovation and adoption of modern tools, technologies, and engineering practices within the domain.
  • Provide day-to-day technical leadership for the pod: prioritise engineering work, remove blockers, mentor engineers, and build a culture of continuous improvement and psychological safety.
  • Support team capability planning (skills coverage, onboarding, succession planning) and contribute to hiring/interviewing where required. Encourage inclusive ways of working and effective collaboration across roles (engineering, QA, product, architecture, operations).
  • Present technical options, delivery status, risks, and trade-offs clearly to senior stakeholders; tailor the message for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Manage dependencies across teams and vendors, ensuring alignment on interfaces, standards, and delivery milestones.
  • Maintain clear communication and effective working relationships across the delivery team, with accountability for control and compliance across the engineering process.
What you need to have to succeed in this role
  • Strong backend engineering capability in Java with Spring Boot.
  • Experience building and running services on Kubernetes.
  • Practical cloud experience, particularly Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • Strong knowledge of API design standards and best practices, including OpenAPI 3.0 / Swagger, REST, JSON, and microservices patterns.
  • Experience with CI/CD tool chains, including Git Hub, Jira, Jenkins (shared libraries), Maven, and Groovy.
  • Knowledge of service security, including OAuth 2.0 authentication/authorisation, and experience with Kong API Gateway.
  • Proven ability to lead a team through delivery, balancing hands‑on contribution with delegation and coaching. Ability to drive decisions to closure.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, confidence in handling challenging situations. Comfortable presenting to senior stakeholders with clear narratives, data‑backed progress reporting, and transparent risk management.
