Software Engineering Manager - Consumer Health Platform

Location

Redwood City, CA (Hybrid: work from home up to 3x/week, with at least 2 days/week in-office).

Our client is a rapidly growing company with approximately 150 employees (including 50 engineers) focused on improving healthcare quality and accessibility through consumer web, mobile, and enterprise software.

• Salary:
  Up to $270k
• Bonus: 10% of salary
• Equity included

You will report to the Director of Engineering and manage a team of 5-7 engineers (backend, frontend, or mobile). The tech stack includes Java (backend), React/Type Script (frontend), and Flutter (mobile).

• 35%:
  Hands-on problem solving, engineering design reviews, and code reviews.
• 30%:
  Technical vision, defining direction, and strategic planning.
• 30%:
  Assessment.
• 15-20%:
  Coding (optional, based on capacity).

• Technical Leadership: Guide a talented team while remaining actively involved in architecture, design choices, and complex technical challenges.
• Ownership: Drive progress, diagnose system/process issues, and resolve obstacles collaboratively.
• Engineering Direction: Shape technical decisions, evaluate trade-offs, and deliver business value.
• Mentorship: Support team growth through coaching and fostering strong engineering practices (testing, reliability, craftsmanship).
• Cross-functional Collaboration: Work with product managers, designers, and analysts to align technical solutions with business goals.

• Startup experience.
• Minimum 1 year of experience as an engineering manager.
• Strong backend engineering background with the ability to manage frontend/mobile engineers.
• Proficiency in at least one of:
  Java, Go, Python, Node.js, C, C++, Android/Kotlin, Flutter, iOS, React Native, or frontend engineering.
• Detail-oriented:
  Comfortable digging into logs, metrics, and diagnostics to debug production issues.
• Self-directed problem solver capable of operating in evolving environments.
• Team-first mindset with high standards for software quality.

• Experience managing Dev Ops engineers.
• Experience managing 10+ engineers.
• Specific expertise in Java and React.
