Overview
Perk is growing its engineering footprint in North America, and we're looking for a Staff Software Engineer to help us do it right. You'll play a central role in a new product launch as Perk continues its expansion - a rare chance to shape something from the ground up.
How we work:
At Perk, we believe the best work happens when great people come together in small teams with a shared sense of purpose. Each team has real ownership of its domain, a genuine say in what gets built, and the autonomy to make it happen. We care about impact, and we trust our people to deliver it.
Responsibilities- Own the technical vision across teams.
- Work across multiple teams to coordinate a shared technical direction, contributing to annual and quarterly plans in collaboration with product managers, engineering managers, and other engineers — translating that into clear, actionable priorities for teams today.
- Be hands-on, with purpose.
- Staff engineers are mostly hands-on — spending the majority of their time actively contributing within one or two teams, and the rest mentoring engineers, unblocking delivery, and working with dependent teams to move shared projects forward.
- Shape how we work, not just what we build.
- Turn high-level business goals into engineering approaches, propose the shape of annual objectives, identify architectural changes needed for scale, and ensure the team invests energy where it counts most.
- Raise the bar for everyone around you.
- Mentor and influence: provide direct mentorship, design reviews, and pairing; explain technical complexity to the wider business; help the team level up their skills to apply them to the domain.
- Coordinate across squads, contribute to engineering initiatives, and drive alignment across the broader organisation; connect dependencies and blockers across teams.
- Product engineering mindset: you work end to end — from understanding customer problems alongside product, through deployment and measuring impact.
- Cross-team technical leadership: experience coordinating significant, multi-team technical initiatives with dependencies and stakeholder alignment.
- Architectural judgment: ability to design scalable, evolvable systems and articulate a clear technical roadmap.
- “You build it, you run it” experience: you have run your own services in production with monitoring, testing, and operations.
- Domain complexity: experience in a domain with significant underlying complexity; ideally flights or travel, but fintech or other complex domains are acceptable.
- Backend-heavy, full-stack comfortable: stack is roughly 80% backend, 20% frontend; comfort across both with strong backend depth. We use Python and AWS; other tools are welcome if you can demonstrate rapid learning.
- Operational maturity: experience leading observability and reliability practices; defining SLOs, handling incidents, and conducting blameless post-mortems.
- Mentorship and influence: track record of helping engineers grow through mentorship and design reviews.
- AI-driven development: experience with or strong interest in AI-augmented workflows, including agentic coding and AI-assisted reviews.
- Receive competitive compensation and equity ownership in Perk
- Rest and recharge with 20 vacation days and 12 public holidays
- Three medical plans to choose from with company contributions and an HSA when enrolling in an HDHP
- Comprehensive benefit plans covering dental, vision and Wellhub’s gym subscription from your start date
- Life and disability coverage from start date with optional voluntary buy-up plans
- 401(k) plan with company matching
- Pet insurance discounts
- Unforgettable Perk events, including an annual summer party
- Spring Health wellbeing support with access to therapy and coaching
- 12-16 weeks paid parental leave
- 16 paid volunteering hours per year
- Up to 20 Work from Anywhere days per year
- Four-week fully paid sabbatical after 5 years
- Relocation support
Compensation for this role is a combination of salary and stock options. The anticipated base salary range is $174,000 - $205,000 per year. Actual compensation may vary based on qualifications, experience, and other job-related factors.
- AI is embedded in how we work and what we build. It spans the whole workflow:
Notion, Jira, Git Hub and Slack are AI-connected to accelerate onboarding and daily work, including feature specification, code writing and automated AI PR review; AI also surfaces context across systems in production. - We expect candidates to use AI tools in coding interviews. The bar is understanding your code and owning what you produce.
(If this job is in fact in your jurisdiction, then you may be using a Proxy or VPN to access this site, and to progress further, you should change your connectivity to another mobile device or PC).
