Software Engineering Manager - Consumer Health Platform
Location:
Redwood City, CA (you can work from home 3x/week).
The company is based in Redwood City, CA. You could work from home up to 3x/week. The company seeks candidates who are enthusiastic to work in the office at least 2 days/week.
The company's product spans healthcare, consumer web, consumer mobile, and enterprise software. The company is reducing costs and improving the quality of healthcare while enabling people to access their healthcare in a convenient and safer way.
The company has about 150 employees, including 50 engineers, and is rapidly growing.
The position offers a salary up to $270,000, a 10% yearly bonus based on salary, and equity.
Job Responsibilities:- You’ll report to the Director of Engineering and manage a team of 5‑7 engineers, which could be any mix of backend, frontend, and mobile engineers.
- The tech stack includes Java on the backend, React/Type Script on the frontend, and Flutter for mobile.
- Time spent in the role would be approximately:
- 35% hands‑on problem solving, engineering design review, and code reviews.
- 30% technical vision, defining direction, and helping people figure out what problems to solve and how to solve them.
- 30% assessment.
- Ideally 15‑20% coding if you have time and want to.
- Hands‑on technical leadership: guide a talented engineering team while remaining actively involved in technical decisions and implementation; review architecture, evaluate design choices, and help engineers solve complex technical challenges.
- Ownership and execution: when obstacles emerge, take responsibility for driving progress; diagnose underlying issues and work collaboratively to resolve them.
- Engineering direction: shape technical decisions that support near‑term objectives and future growth, evaluating trade‑offs thoughtfully while maintaining momentum and delivering business value.
- Developing engineers: support growth of team members through coaching, collaboration, and example; foster strong engineering practices around maintainability, testing, reliability, and craftsmanship.
- Collaboration across disciplines: work closely with product managers, designers, analysts, and other stakeholders to align technical solutions with business goals and contribute perspective on feasibility, complexity, and long‑term product success.
- Startup experience.
- At least 1 year (preferably more) of experience as an engineering manager.
- Strong in backend engineering and able to manage some frontend and/or mobile engineers.
- Skilled as an engineer with at least one of:
Java, Go or Python, Node.js, C, C++, Android/Kotlin, Flutter, iOS, React Native, or frontend engineering. - A detail‑oriented technical leader who enjoys understanding how systems behave in production and is comfortable digging into logs, diagnostics, metrics, and debugging information to investigate issues firsthand.
- A self‑directed problem solver who proactively identifies opportunities for improvement and operates comfortably in situations where requirements are incomplete or evolving. You have repeatedly transformed uncertainty into measurable outcomes.
- High standards and team‑first mindset: you care deeply about building high‑quality software, help teams succeed, and value collaboration over recognition while focusing on delivering exceptional results regardless of credit.
- Managed 10+ engineers.
- Experience with Java and React.
